Baseball: Foxborough Loses to Hockomock Rival Sharon

Sharon High School varsity baseball team scored six runs without an RBI to beat Foxborough, 6-2

The scored six runs without an RBI to beat visiting Foxborough, 6-2, on Senior Day in Sharon Saturday.

Warriors senior captain Steve Fitzmaurice, in his first 2011 start, made five run-scoring wild pitches -- three straight to Sharon's Jake Dennis in the third -- before leaving with one out in the third due to a shoulder injury.

"He's our best player. He's usually our centerfielder. I wanted to give him a chance to get a start today," Foxborough head coach Billy Sittig said.

"It was probably my fault for leaving him out there a little bit too long. He had some control issues, but he hadn't started a game for us all year.

"I think he has a little bit of a shoulder issue, but we'll get it checked out."

Sharon scored three runs in both the second and third innings. A pick-off throwing error by junior catcher Jim Flaherty gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead in the second.

"He's a tough kid," Sharon head coach Joel Peckham said of Fitzmaurice. "He's usually pretty good.

"I don't care how we score them, as long as we score them."

Sharon senior tri-captain Dan Friedman allowed single runs in the first and seventh innings.

He scattered four hits, walked two, hit a batter and struck out seven for the complete game victory.

Foxborough took a 1-0 lead in the first. Friedman hit leadoff batter Nick Tredo, who then stole second. Flaherty then singled to third, putting runners at the corners. Fitzmaurice's sacrifice fly to center scored Tredo.

"Danny pitched a good game after the first inning. Settled down and threw the ball well," Peckham said.

Saturday's game was a make-up of a game rained out both Monday and Tuesday. Sharon played its first full game of the week due to the weather. And Saturday's forecast looked questionable.

"I was here at 8 a.m., and I wasn't sure we were going to be able to play," Peckham said.

Sharon (11-5) travels to at 4 p.m. Monday. The Eagles have qualified for the postseason.

Foxborough (3-13) hosts Oliver Ames at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
