Baseball: Foxborough Loses Close Game to Sharon

Foxborough falls to Sharon 2-0 after struggling to get men on base.

It was a frustrating afternoon at Foxboro High School.  Despite the score only showing a 2-0 loss, the Warriors struggled to get men on base and to keep the Sharon Eagles off of base. Despite leading the whole game, the close score drove Eagles Manager Joel Peckham a bit crazy.

“What do you think? Joked Peckman when asked about the frustration involved with close games. “I’ve been doing this for a long time so you know its tormenting but my kids played great.”

Sharon’s David Roberto pitched a gem of a game after being sick for a week. Striking out 15 and only giving up 2 hits, Roberto spent the afternoon keeping Warrior bats silent and the Eagles ahead on the scoreboard.

“He was special. He threw strikes. His curve ball and off speed stuff was great. He’s a tough kid. He competes and he stays with it so I’m very pleased,” said Peckman.

Runs for the Eagles came in the top of the first  from Eric Tung after a wild throw to third allowed him to score the opening run. Sharon’s second run would come in the top of the 7th after Nate Peterson drove in Dan Freidman to take a 2-0 lead.

Peterson also had the best game offensively by going 2/4 with 2 stolen bases and a RBI. Hits also came from David Zabinsky and  Jake Fishman.

On the other side of the diamond, it was tough day for Foxboro pitcher Brandon Golud. Struggling to keep the ball under control, Goult walked 6 batters and threw 112 pitches in 5 1/3 innings of actions.

While Foxborough struggled to get hits, they stayed in the game defensively. Getting out of jams including  a bases loaded situation in the top of the 5th, the Warriors never quit and did everything they could in teams of run prevention.

“We didn’t have a hit through the first 5 inning but our guys didn’t get down. They battled. I think that’s the make up of our team. We have a bunch of hard nose guys that aren't gonna give in,” said Warriors coach Billy Sittig.

While the loss may sting, there is little time to sulk. The Warriors will have to try to bounce back against the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers tomorrow afternoon.

“We have to bounce back tomorrow,” said Sittig. “They’re one of the best teams in Massachusetts this year. One the one hand this loss is tough but we have to get back at it tomorrow and be ready to go against a good team.”
