Avery Best In Bay State at 189 Lbs.

Foxboro High senior Vic Avery claimed the state title in the 189 lbs. weight class at the MIAA All-State Wrestling Championships at Salem High's Veterans Memorial Field House last night.

Most kids would have been over the moon immediately after winning a state championship.

Most kids aren’t Foxborough High senior Vic Avery.

Avery, now an astounding 44-0, knocked out Kyle Humphries (44-1) of East Longmeadow by virtue of a 7-4 decision to capture the crown in the 189 lbs. weight class at the MIAA All-State wrestling championships at Salem High School’s Veterans Memorial Field House, but was still disappointed with the way he wrestled.

“Right now I’m not really that happy,” said Avery who is slated to join the prestigious NCAA Division 1 wrestling program at Edinboro University next year. “It’s not as good as I wanted it to be, I didn’t wrestle well in the finals. I don’t know if it was nerves, but I wanted to get the tech. That obviously wasn’t a tech.”

Coming in to the final, both Avery and Humphries were undefeated.

“He’s alright,” said Avery of his finals opponent. “He was strong ... he had a gas tank which was good, it forced me to stall a little bit at the end.”

Avery has turned in a fantastic season for Foxboro, garnering MVP honors in the Hockomock League and capturing the division 3 state championship on Feb. 18 at Holliston. Despite the honors he has earned so far, Avery is far from finished.

“It’s not what I was hoping for, but I guess you just take it and advance to New England’s and work a little harder on my conditioning,” he said. “I’m thinking nationals and I’m thinking New England’s.”

Avery went 4-0 over the course of the two-day tournament, besting James Fredericks of New Bedford by technical fall in the preliminary round, Framingham’s Mike Patterson by major decision (24-10) in the quarterfinals and Leo Trindade of Billerica by pin at 4:44 in the semis.

Also competing from Foxborough High was Bryan Dorman at 130 lbs. Dorman narrowly missed joining Avery at the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships in New Haven March 4. Dorman lost a 10-1 major decision to Lowell High’s Johnny Melo in the preliminary round, but defeated Milford’s Richard Santiago with a 15-3 major decision in the consolation rounds before being eliminated by Hudson’s Patrick O’Connell 9-5.
