Massachusetts public schools are required to hold 180 school days each academic year. However, most districts use a 185-day calendar to anticipate days off for emergencies and weather.

State Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester told school officials statewide today that, "Snow day waivers from the state's 180-day school year requirement are "premature" right now."

Many schools in Massachusetts have seen upwards to six snow days already this winter and are in far worse shape in regards to their school calenders and make up day options.
