Tips for Capturing Back-to-School Memories

Expert tips for snapping the perfect first day of school photo.

"Smile, its the first day of school," is a statement that brings out the joy, excitement and for some, dread, of returning to school.

The new school year begins on September 6 in Foxborough, and parents and caregivers are charging up their cameras, getting ready for first day of school pictures. The classic first day of school photograph typically includes students standing outside their homes or at the bus stop, showing off their new backpacks, shoes and an outfit that is sure to make an impression with their new classmates.

To ensure that your own first day of school pictures are ready to be stored away as a perfect memory, local area Photographer, Jen Osojnicki offered a few tips for parents and caregivers to keep in mind when snapping away.

Senior High School photos:

  • Never wear short sleeve shirts, it will cut across the largest part of your arm
  • Don't wear make up that has SPF. It can cause shine in the photographs
  • Keep your clothes simple and comfortable - avoid patterns. You want your face to standout and not your clothing!
  • Go easy on the jewelery and wear your makeup like you normally would. Don't go crazy with the tanning booth or spray tan. Guys should have a fresh shave.
  • Bring someone with you to your session that can help you relax and make you laugh.
  • Don't be worried about blemishes or braces. Your photographer can take care of that.
  • Bring props that show your interest like a football or cheerleading outfit.
  • Pick a place that shows your personality like a beach or stadium.

  • Always have the sun behind the kids if you can not find a shady spot.
  • For younger children, try to get down to their level. Move in closer and fill the frame.
  • Use a flash outside even in the sun.
  • Make sure to photograph all the details such as them eating breakfast, friends at the bus stop and the driver.
