Sup. Spinelli: No Plans to Change Warriors Logo and Name

Addressing a report and worry that the Warriors’ logo was left off the high school's turf field as part of a move away from Native American imagery, Foxboro Superintendent Debra Spinelli said there are no plans to change the Warrior name or the logo.

“We are Warriors, we will always be Warriors, we are not changing the logo,” Spinelli said recently at a school committee meeting.

While admitting she has not received any calls on the issue, Spinelli said she was aware of some concern in the community that the schools may stop using the logo after choosing to keep it off the field.

In October, selectman Jim DeVellis, who helped lead the effort for a turf field at the high school, told the Foxboro Reporter it was his understanding that the decision to have FHS at midfield rather than the Warriors logo was done in line with a national trend to reduce use of logos that may offend Native Americans.

Spinelli however said that there have not been any discussions about the logo and the decision was done to as a cost-saving measure.

The logo will still be used on athletic gear and uniforms.

Like most high schools in the area including Mansfield, Oliver Ames, and Attleboro, a letter or the school initials are painted at midfield rather than an actual logo.

Foxboro’s turf field opened up for play in late October when the boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, and field hockey teams all played their last regular season games on the field.
