Foxborough to Join in at International Walk to School Day

Foxborough, Mansfield and Sharon to take part in event with over 3,500 other schools.

Elementary Schools in Foxboro, Mansfield and Sharon, Sharon will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Oct. 5.   

Burrell, Igo and Taylor Elementary School students and families will be taking part in the celebration on Oct. 5. Parents, teachers, Hockomock Area YMCA staff, and community leaders from the Healthy Futures Task Force will be walking with students and families on both days. 

Families are encouraged to walk from home if they reside 1 mile from school, or make plans to walk from a friend or neighbor’s house.

The Foxboro YMCA and school officials have also designated specific meeting locations throughout the town for families to meet at and continue the walk to school which ranges from three-quarters of a mile to 1 ¼ mile.

All routes will have YMCA staff and school/community volunteers as crossing guards and leaders, but parents are still encouraged and recommended to walk with their children.

In Foxboro, the event will begin at with kids, parents and community leaders walking from the following locations: Burrell School-Meet at Cannon Forge Recreation Center at 8:20 a.m. and leave at 8:30 a.m. Igo School - Meet at the Foxboro YMCA at 8:10 a.m. and leave at 8:20 a.m, Taylor School-Meet at Water Street at 8:25 a.m., Fairway Lane at 8:25 a.m. and Paula Lane at 8:15 a.m.

In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to be celebrated at over 3,500 events at participating schools. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by the Hockomock Area YMCA Invensys Foxboro Branch, PTO groups, Safe Routes to School Committees, and the Healthy Futures Task Force members.  The Healthy Futures Task Force is a group comprised of community leaders and representatives dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of our community families and youth.  International Walk to School Day is a part of Healthy Futures month; a month of activities and programs for families to remain active and healthy.
