Foxborough School Committee Reviews, Sets Goals For the Year

Report cards summarizing achievement in the district is one of the many goals.

Foxborough's school committee held their annual summer meeting Monday night at the Chapel Meeting House in Foxborough.

The board meeting held a special meaning for Superintendent Debbie Spinelli and Assistant Superintendent Amy Berdos, as it was their first board meeting in their new positions.

Spinelli and Berdos, who began her position as Assistant Superintendent two weeks ago, both transitioned into their new positions smoothly, discussing the school district's strategic goals in a veteran manner.

The board discussed and reviewed the many goals that the district set for the 2011-2012 school year.

The publishing of report cards summarizing achievement in the district is just one of many district goals set for the year. The report card will be published at the mid-year and at the end of the school year.

Other updated goals from last year's plan included communication and community relations, financial management, policy development and the superintendent's performance.

Student achievement was discussed in length and sparked debate when school committee member Kate Kominsky put the idea of "healthier student lunch offerings on the table."

Kominsky wants to see that the school's lunch offerings line up with the district's commitment to student wellness.

"[Our] food meets our guidelines, but not our values," said Kominsky.

School committee member, Martha Slattery, noted in the discussion that the focus should be on education and that parents need to set the example for choosing healthier foods.
