American Sign Language Thriving at Foxboro High School

The following was submitted by Assistant Superintendent Amy Berdos as part of the school committee's Teaching and Learning Highlight series.

American Sign Language (ASL) was featured at Monday night’s School Committee meeting as the Teaching and Learning Highlight.  Foxborough High School World Language Teachers Linda Cameron and Jessica McAlister were joined by several of their ASL students to share how ASL is not only a thriving language at FHS, but one that reaches out and touches the greater community.  FHS ASL students Alexandra Howe, Hayley Callahan, Julia Broccoli, Allison Mendes, Jasper Cabao-An, Peter Cabao-An and Alexandra Benjamin shared with the committee the many projects they have been involved in as ASL students.

Have you ever wondered who those students are that ‘sign’ the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance at FHS Football games and Pep Rallies?  You may have spotted them at Gillette Stadium signing before the start of a UMASS or Revolution game.  If you haven’t had the chance to see some of these talented students, possibly you have heard about them from your own children as they also visit the three elementary schools and the Ahern Middle School.

American Sign Language is one of the three world languages offered at FHS.  Students reported that they find it rewarding as well as challenging. They described a number of ways the curriculum has been brought to life for them including going out into the community to experience what it is like for the hearing impaired.  The opportunities afforded by the ASL program have been eye opening and provided memorable real world lessons.
