Time For Action Regarding A Soccer Specific Stadium For The Revolution

When will the Revs have their own home? Read my thoughts on why I think it is time for Revolution management to act now.

I recently saw the unveiling of a brand new soccer specific stadium for Sporting Kansas City. Of course when I saw this facility, this question popped into my head once again. When will the Revolution finally get their own stadium? There has been talk about this option for the Revolution since 2007.  I have had enough of talking about it. It is time for action regarding a soccer specific stadium for the Revoultion.

Sporting Kansas City's new stadium is called Livestrong Sporting Park, and it opened June 9th with a capacity of over 18,000. This facility actually looks pretty spectacular. This park already hosted Gold Cup matches.

More and more MLS teams now have their own soccer specific stadiums. The New York Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union both got their own last year. The Revolution haven't even announced that they have a location, and a plan to move ahead.

As I mentioned in the beginning, we are now going on 4 years of discussions regarding the potential of a new home for the Revs. In August of 2007, the Boston Herald had an article that the Revolution were considering a new stadium in Somerville.

So much time has passed, and the Revs still don't have a concrete plan for a future location for the team. Last July, the Boston Globe had an update on this situation. This article mentions that Revs ownership were again considering the Somerville location.

That Boston Globe article was almost one year ago. We still do not have a concrete announcement of a soccer specific stadium for the Revolution.

Revolution management have had plenty of time to assess the situation from their first discussion regarding a new home. Enough with the talk, it is time to see a plan for the future location of the New England Revolution.

The Revs average attendance last season, and this year has been over 12,000 per game. These loyal fans really deserve a first class facility to call their own. Playing in a stadium that holds 65,000 plus is not ideal, and it is not their own. They share Gillette Stadium with the Patriots.

I am not going to shock anyone by saying that Gillette Stadium was primarily built for the Patriots. It is time for ownership to show the fans, and their players they really care about the organization.

If they have the plan in place to start construction on a new stadium, it could go along way in moving the team forward to the future. Right now, I think it could be hard for fans to hear management saying that they are still working on it. There has been enough written, and said to know that the Revolution want their own facility. It is time to prove it.

If the location in Somerville is not going to work, then they should move on from it. Since 2007, I really feel their could be more locations now out there with property available in the Boston area.

If they cannot make it work away from Gillette Stadium, then they should consider a location on their property in Foxboro. The owners of the Revolution still have a good amount of land where I think they could find a place for the Revs.

MLS is growing in many locations across the country. The quality of play continues to improve, and the league is not going anywhere. The Revs can stay where they are, or choose to grow the game in New England with their own place.

If you build a first class fan friendly stadium for the Revs, I feel you will see attendance go up dramatically. In fact, I could see them come close to 20,000 per game. If the Revs build it, I believe the fans will come.
