Revs vs. Real Salt Lake: Match Preview

The Revs are on the road on the 4th of July to meet Real Salt Lake. Read who I am predicting to win this match.

The Revs are coming off of a 2-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders on the road last Sunday. They will be on the road once again on Monday to face Real Salt Lake Rio Tinto Stadium. The match takes place at 8:30 PM EST. The game will be shown on ESPN 2, and also can be heard on 98.5 The Sports Hub.

The Revolution (3-8-6, 15 points), in their last match came out strong, and scored an early goal to take the lead. Sainey Nyassi  scored in the 3rd minute to propel the Revolution ahead in the first half. However, the Sounders would score 2 goals later in the half to take the lead. The Revs would have several chances in the second half to score, but just could not convert. The Revs lost 2-1 to the Sounders.

Real Salt Lake ( 7-3-5, 26 points) are coming off of a 3-1 MLS victory last Saturday Night against Toronto FC at home. Álvaro Saborío scored two goals leading the home team to victory. They will be looking for 3 points on the 4th of July against the Revs.

The teams met earlier this season at Gillette Stadium. Real Salt Lake really dominated this match. They beat the Revs at home 2-0 with goals from Chris Schuler and Paulo Jr. The Revs had no answers for the diamond formation of Real Salt Lake.

The Revs do have injury concerns for this match. According to Revolutionsoccer.net, here are the injuries for the club.

Probable: Stephen McCarthy (shoulder subluxation)

Questionable: Ousmane Dabo (quadriceps strain) , Didier Domi (achilles tendonitis)

Out: Kheli Dube (whiplash)

Key players to watch in this match for the Revs are Shalrie Joseph and Benny Feilhaber. This match could very easily be decided in the midfield. The Revs had a hard time figuring out the diamond formation of Real Salt Lake. Feilhaber and Joseph will be counted upon to take control away from the home team. If they do their job well, the Revs could have a shot of a huge upset.

Key players to watch for Real Salt Lake are Saborío and Kyle Beckerman. Saborio scored two goals up front for Real Salt Lake against Toronto FC, and should be looking for more goals against the Revs. Beckerman is the key to the midfield for the home team. If he is controlling this part of the field, it could be a long night for the Revs.

This match is going to very difficult for the Revs to win. The Revs have been dominated by the home team in the last two times they have played at Rio Tinto Stadium.

To be honest I just don’t see the Revs being able to pull off the away victory. Real Salt Lake are a legitimate contender to win the MLS Cup.  I am predicting a 4-1 loss for the Revs against Real Salt Lake.
