Revs Comeback Falls Short in 2-1 Loss To The New York Red Bulls

The Revs were back in action on the road against the New York Red Bulls Friday Night.Read how the Revs fared in this away game.

Going into this match, the Revs had their work cut out for them playing the 2nd place New York Red Bulls on the road. They would fall behind by 2 goals early in the second half, but battle back furiously to get into the match. However, it was not enough to overcome Thierry Henry's game winner in the second half. The Revs comeback falls short in a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls.

The game started quickly, and the Revs almost found themselves down a goal in the first minute. Luke Rodgers had a great shot that just went wide of the net. The Red Bulls (5-2-7, 22 points) made their presence felt very early on in this game.

The Revs (3-7-4, 13 points) would hang in there, and had their chances to score in the first half. In the 17 th minute, the Revs had a set piece from just inside the Red Bulls half. Chris Tierney sent a wonderful ball to Pat Phelan, who got a shot off that just went across and wide of the net.

The best chance in the first half for the Revs came in the 33rd minute. Tierney from the left side sent a great pass into the box to Rajko Lekic. He was fouled in the box by Stephen Keel, and a penalty kick was rewarded. Shalrie Joseph took the shot that was saved nicely by Greg Sutton. The Revs let an incredible opportunity slip through their fingers.

The Red Bulls would capitalize on their scoring opportunity minutes later. Henry would make a great run on the right side, and would send the ball into the box. Ryan Cochrane would kick the ball into the net for an own goal. Unfortunately the Red Bulls were then up 1-0. The half would end shortly afterwards with the same score.

It wouldn't take long into the second half for New York to double their lead. In the 50th minute, Henry made another fabulous run down the left side. He would completely fake out Cochrane, and send a rocket shot that gets by Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis. The Revs were then trailing 2-0.

To their credit, the Revs would fight back into this match, and not give up. In the 54th minute, they would get one back. Tierney would send a great cross into the box from the left side. Zak Boggs would take this pass, and slam the ball into the back of the net past Sutton. The Revs were then down 2-1.

The Revs were far from done in attempting to get back into this game. Kenny Mansally entered the match into the second half, and made a huge impact. In the 59th minute, Lekic set up Mansally with an opportunity from just outside the center of the box. His blistering shot was just deflected away by Sutton to deny the Revs their second goal.

In the 72nd minute, Mansally would make his presence felt once again. He would jump all over a bad Red Bulls pass which took him one on one with Sutton. His shot just went wide of the net.

The Revs continued to drive forward, and it looked like they got the equalizer late in the match. Sainey Nyassi on the right side sent a great pass to Lekic who was right in front of the net. His header went into the back of the net, but he was called for offsides. Replays showed it was the correct call.

The Red Bulls would have their own chances late in the match, but they were not able to convert on them. The Revs goalkeeper came up big to keep the game close.

In the end, the Revs would make a tremendous effort to try to get some kind of result from this match. Unfortunately, they were not able to convert on a few of their second half opportunities. The game ended with the Revs losing 2-1 to the New York Red Bulls.

You never like to lose, but the positive to take out of this match was the way the Revs responded in the second half. The problems in the final third continue, but if they can fix that issue, the Revs could start seeing 3 points from matches instead of getting nothing.

The Revs will next be in action on Wednesday June 15th against Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium. The match begins at 8PM EST.

New England Revolution: Matt Reis, Didier Domi, A.J. Soares, Ryan Cochrane, Kevin Alston, Chris Tierney, Ousmane Dabo (Stephen McCarthy 20), Shalrie Joseph, Pat Phelan (Kenny Mansally 56), Zak Boggs (Sainey Nyassi 85), Rajko Lekic
