There are just hours left until the federal budget deadline. At this point it is unclear whether Democrats and Republicans will be able to reach a deal. According to CBS News, government officials are meeting at the White House today, April 7, trying to hammer out a deal. However, with little time left and fiery disagreement between parties, a government shutdown is not out of the question. 

Government agencies are preparing to shutdown for the first time in 15 years. Many services will be suspended, impacting citizens across the country.

Here is a look of what would be impacted if Congress can't strike a deal in time.

  • The State Department will likely stop issuing new passports, affecting the travel industry. 
  • The Social Security Administration would continue to distribute benefits to current beneficiaries, but new applicants would likely be delayed. 
  • The Small Business Administration would not be able to approve small-business loans.
  • The National Park Service would be forced to close over 300 sites.
  • The military would continue to operate but without pay. Military personnel would begin to be paid once the government reopens. 
  • The Department of Homeland Security's workers will work without pay until the government reopens. 
  • Be careful of catching any dangerous diseases because the National Institute of Health's disease hotlines and CDC surveillance will most likely be suspended.
