Senator Timilty Welcomes Students to the State House

Senator Timilty welcomed students to the State House Wednesday.

Senator Timilty (D-Walpole) welcomed students to the State House Wednesday to help them lobby in favor for legislation which proponents argue could seriously reduce life-threatening emergencies on school campuses.

Ryan Gordy, a Blackstone-Millville Regional High School soccer coach, joined students Timothy McLaughlin and Tyler and Alex McIsaac to show support for Senate Bill 218, “An Act relative to medical emergency response plans for schools.”  Senator Timilty is a cosponsor of the bill.

“With an issue where youth participation is such an important factor, I am very pleased that Timothy, Tyler and Alex took the time to come and participate in the legislative process,” said Senator Timilty.

If passed, this legislation would require school committees across the Commonwealth to implement written emergency response plans to include methods for rapid communication anywhere on a school campuses.  Included among the requirements are access for school staff to train in CPR, a number of safety precautions to prevent injuries, and incentives for schools to purchase outside defibrillators for sports events and on playgrounds.

The students cite Sutton student Michael Ellsessar, who died at the age of 16 after collapsing during a junior varsity football game as the source of their inspiration.

“It’s such an inspiration to see our young leaders actively engaging their government for issues that are important to them.  Their parents and teachers should be proud of all their hard work,” finished Senator Timilty.

Senate Bill 218 is currently in the Joint Committee on Education where it awaits further action by the committee.
