Senator Timilty Supports Reduction in Youth Hunting & Fishing Fees

Provisions in FY12 budget make outdoor sporting activities more affordable

Senator Jim Timilty announced that two provisions in the Commonwealth’s Fiscal Year 2012 budget facilitate Massachusetts youth participation in hunting and freshwater fishing.

The budget reduces the fee for anyone under 18 years of age applying for a firearm identification card for hunting from $100 to $25.  The fee for a freshwater fishing license would be waived for youths.  These proposals originated in the Senate during its budget debate in May.

“Young people involved in hunting and fishing are participating in wholesome, historic activities, part of the state’s agricultural tradition,” said Timilty in his press release. “Reducing fees for these licenses will help encourage an appreciation for the outdoors and a sense of stewardship for the Commonwealth’s natural resources among the next generation of citizens.”

The FY12 budget was enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives today.  Governor Patrick now has 10 days to review the document and issue vetoes or amendments.
