POW/MIA Recognition Set for Sept. 16-17 in Foxborough

John Mitchell hopes to start an annual tradition in Foxborough that will carry over to other towns.

Foxborough will recognize POW/MIA Remembrance Day in a big way this fall.  The selectmen unanimously approved a new event to take place on Foxborough Common September 16 and 17.

The new ceremony is the final project of Foxborough student John Mitchell, who will become an Eagle Scout upon the project’s completion. Mitchell hopes to start an annual tradition in Foxborough that will carry over to other towns.

“It’s a day that doesn’t get a lot of recognition from most people,” he said.

“We think its great work, and we hope it gets you over the edge,” said Selectman James DeVellis.

Beginning at 6 pm on September 16, a three-person honor guard will be presiding over a ‘Remembrance Table’ on the Common for 24 hours.  The table will consist of items symbolizing various things that soldiers who are not returning home this year will miss. Mitchell hopes to recruit 36 veterans and boy scouts to stand for two-hour shifts as part of the honor guard.

The service will conclude at 5:00pm September 17 with the presenting of an American Flag to a prominent Foxborough citizen. Mitchell had wanted that person to be Town Manager Kevin Paicos, himself a veteran. Paicos, unfortunately, will be out of town but suggested the Selectmen instead.

“I was above humbled and honored to be asked to receive the flag,” Paicos said.

Mitchell has also invited the Selectmen to speak at the event.
