Post Office Exploring Selling Foxboro Location

If sold, the U.S. Postal Service would open a smaller retail space in town.

With a 38-40 percent drop in the amount of mail delivered nationwide in the past five years, the U.S. Postal Service will now go ahead and explore the possibility of selling the Foxboro post office building on Wall Street and move mail operations to Mansfield.

If the sale is successful, Foxboro would retain a retail post office that would only need a 400 sq. ft. store but all mail delivery related operations would move to the Mansfield location.

“We’re not closing any post office. We’re going to relocate the retail service,” postal service representative Joseph Mulvey told the Foxboro selectmen on Aug. 20.

A decision on the post office’s fate will be made by the facilities manager after a comment period that will end in early September. If a decision is made to close the building, a notice will be sent to the town manager and posted in the post office. Residents will have 30 days to appeal the decision.

If location is finally approved after the review and appeal process, the post office would then begin the deposition of the property.

A move will not happen unless there is a confirmed buyer for the building and the postal service has a confirmed deal to buy a new retail space at the same time.

Answering the concerns of board members and residents, Mulvey said that mail routes should not be impacted significantly by moving operations to Mansfield.

“There might be some adjustment to the routes due to the extra milage. The number of routes that exist today will be the same amount of routes that will exist afterwards,” Mulvey said.

Those who wish to comment on the process can write to the postal service at the following address through Sept. 4: Joseph Mulvey, U.S. Postal Service, 2 Congress Street, Room 8, Milford, MA 01757. Commenters should reference the post office by the community's name.
