Norfolk Planning Board Against Foxborough Casino

The Norfolk Planning Board came out against the Foxborough casino proposal.

The Norfolk Planning Board has indicated its disapproval of the Foxborough casino proposal in a letter sent earlier this month.

In the letter, the board expresses its support of the Foxborough town government decision not to negotiate to become a host community.

The board said the proposal could cause problems for Foxborough and the surrounding towns.

"Increases in traffic, criminal activity and drunk driving would signifcantly deteriorate the quality of life for residents, those engaged in local businesses and others who visit our communities," the letter reads. "The character of Foxborough, Norfolk and Walpole would be adversely impacted to the point where many families who were once attracted to the area will seek to relocate."

The letter noted that many residents of nearby towns are quite close to the casino site.

"Nearby residents, especially those on Everett Street, are already burdened before and after football games and concerts," the letter reads. "A 24/7 operation, such as a casino, would place a major strain on Route 1 and will result in significantly more traffic on Everett Street, as well as Route 115, which traverses our town center and town green."

The Planning Board also indicated its concern about proposed zoning laws in Foxborough, one of which allows buildings up to 300 feet in height.

"It should be evident that a development of this scale is not practical, as it will adversely impact the lives of nearby residents on a daily basis and cause a sharp decline in home values," the letter reads.

The board closes its letter by supporting Foxborough's decision not to endorse the project.
