State Sen. James Timilty, a Democrat whose district includes Foxborough, wants to explore the possibility of bringing NASCAR to Massachusetts.

"Given the enormous popularity of the sport across the country and here in Massachusetts as well, it is worthwhile to have a solid understanding of what the costs and benefits might be to the Commonwealth," Timilty said in a statement. "The New Hampshire Motor Speedway has incredible success in hosting NASCAR races and I think it is important to take a look at the possibility of attracting those tourist dollars and other associated revenues to Massachusetts."

Timilty, a Walpole resident, introduced an amendment to the Senate's economic development bill that directs the Massachusetts Sports Partnership to compile a report about the possibility of Massachusetts hosting a NASCAR race.

The report would be due on July 1, 2015. It would explore potential host venues, costs and revenues, and how local laws or ordinances would affect such an event.

Should Massachusetts host a NASCAR race?

Not a bad idea. I'm not the biggest NASCAR fan but I've been to a few races and the crowds and passionate fans are impressive.

If it is something viable, then let the track operators present it. Maybe the senator wants to set up a NASCAR commission to stuff more hacks on the state payroll ? NASCAR in MA ? Hmmm let's see, first we'll have to lower the exhaust decibel levels, run the car through the emission test, apply affirmative action to pit crew hiring, and tack a surcharge on tickets, with the money going to Devalue to hand over to his constituency of illegals.
