Former State Treasurer Cahill Indicted for Using Lottery Funds in Governor Run

Former state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill was indicted by a grand jury on charges of fraud and conspiracy.

Runining taxpayer-funded Lottery ads, while he was campaigning for governor, has led to former state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill to be indicted by by a grand jury of charges of fraud and conspiracy, involving $1.5 million, according to Attorney General Martha Coakley in a Boston Herald report today. Two former staffers, Scott Campbell, Cahill's campaign manager, and Al Grazioso, the lottery chief of staff,  were also indicted in the case.

In an effort to praise his leadership as the state treasurer, Coakley says Cahill used the Lottery's advertising budget to pay for advertising for his race for governor.

“The essence of this crime, which is a political corruption crime, ... is using public resources to give yourself an edge,” Coakley said, according to the Boston Herald.

“All elected officials need to be aware there will be greater scrutiny with taxpayer dollars."

In response to the indictments in a separate press release, State Treasurer Steven Grossman issued the following comment:

“These indictments detail fundamental and outrageous violations of the public trust, as well as gross abuse of public office.  We have cooperated fully with this investigation and will continue to do so.  From day one, we have implemented long overdue reforms at Treasury to make it more transparent, professional and accountable to all citizens of the Commonwealth.”

The Boston Herald said Cahill could not be reached for comment.
