Board of Health Restricts E-Cigarettes Sales and Use

The Board of Health this week approved a new ban on the sales of e-cigarettes to minors and to prohibit the use of the devices anywhere smoking is prohibited according to the Sun Chronicle.
The ban will start on Aug. 1

The safety of the seven year old devices has been controversal and debated for years. Instead of using tobacco, the devices delivers an aerosol puff of nicotine when inhaled.

According to Judith Coykendall, program manager of the Tobacco-Free Community Partnership in New Bedford, Foxborough is one of the few communities to place restrictions on what is still a fairly new product.

The device, which is often used to help smokers break their habit, cannot be regulated as a medical device basked on a 2010 federal appeals court ruled but can be regulated as a tobacco product.

The board also chose not to ban the sale of "blunt wraps," believing the issue is beter left to Police Chief Ed O'Leary.
