Around Town: Officials No Longer Exploring Saturday Town Meetings; Get Involved with Founders Day & More

Here's a round up of news briefs from around Foxborough.

Foxborough’s Board of Selectmen announced last week it will no longer be pursuing Saturday Town Meetings.

“Topic is officially dead,” said Board of Selectmen chair James DeVellis.

Selectmen had spent the last several months discussing the possibility of moving future Town Meetings to Saturdays as a way to improve attendance, especially among the senior population, but the concept received little support from the community.

“I have heard nothing more [from the community] about [moving Town Meeting to Saturday],” said Foxborough Board of Selectmen vice chair Mark Sullivan. “Other than the first conversation I had in my last election I haven’t heard a thing about it.”

Said selectman Lorraine Brue: “I haven’t received any requests for it but I have received a couple rejections to it from a religious basis.”

DeVellis also said he hadn’t heard anything more about the issue. He asked the board if it would be worth pursuing a bylaw change regarding the time of Town Meeting from 7:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sullivan said the town has enough problems with getting people to attend the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and making Town Meeting earlier would likely not solve the problem.

“If we move it to 7 p.m. we won’t have a quorum until 7:30 p.m.,” said Sullivan.

Selectman Lynda Walsh agreed.

“Half an hour won’t make a difference to anybody so just keep it to 7:30 p.m.,” she said.

Feb. 26 BOS Agenda Full

While selectmen will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to hold a public hearing regarding an alteration to Jake n JOES floor plan, the board’s Feb. 26 meeting is loaded with items on its agenda.

DeVellis highlighted some of the items the board will discuss:

“We will be talking about the Strong Town Manager’s Act,” DeVellis said. “We have a panel of people coming in to answer questions. At the very least we will have a better understanding of the Strong Town Manager’s Act and how it relates to Foxborough.”

“We have the Massachusetts Gaming Commission coming in on our request to answer questions regarding the Plainville development.”

“We have the New England Revolution coming in for their schedule and permit and we have three concerts that we made conditional approval on that we hope to close the book on.”

“We’ve got executive session scheduled to discuss the sexual abuse allegations against William Sheehan and how to help the survivors.”

Get Involved with Founders Day

This year’s Founders Day, which is set for June 8, will be celebrating 25 years.

“It is a good opportunity if you want to put a float in there or make a donation,” said DeVellis. Stop by Cindi’s Jewelers and see Cindi Haddad-Drew, who is chairing the planning committee. That’s going to be a great day and especially 25 years running is fantastic.”
