Police Chief: Crowd Behavior During Patriots Playoff Games Was 'Exceptional'

The following is a summary of police activity and incidents reported from the Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 New England Patriots NFL playoff games at Gillette Stadium, as reported in Foxborough's police logs.

While the New England Patriots most recent playoff run ended in disappointment it did bring the two largest and most well behaved crowds of the 2012-13 season to Foxborough, according to Police Chief Edward O’Leary.

“Crowd behavior [during the Patriots playoff games] was exceptional,” O’Leary said. “Things went very well.”

In the Jan. 13 AFC Divisional Round game at Gillette Stadium, police reported 44 protective custodies and seven arrests out of a crowd of 68,756. The following week, police reported 33 protective custodies and seven arrests out of a crowd of 68,756 at the Jan. 20 AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium.

O’Leary said in his experience he has noticed that playoff games generally bring more well-behaved crowds.

“As the quality of the opponents increase and games become more intense people tend to focus more on the games and less on the drinking,” O’Leary said. “Which is always a good thing.”
