Update: Firefighters Extinguish Compost Blaze in Foxborough

Area Fire Departments respond to a compost fire at DPW/composting facility in Foxborough Friday night.

The Foxborough Fire Department, with assistance from Mansfield and Walpole, responded to a compost fire burning at 70 Elm Street, the DPW/composting facility in Foxborough on Friday night, July 15 at 7:30pm.

According to the Foxborough Fire Department, the cause of fire is still unknown, however, yard waste material, when decomposing, can become extremely hot.

Fire crews battled the compost blaze, in which smoke could be seen for miles, until 9:00pm.

A front-end loader from the highway department was brought in to help pull apart the compost pile. Fire crews stayed on the scene until midnight to make sure the fire was put out for good.
