2 Foxborough Men Among 8 Arrested During Weekend Sobriety Checkpoint in Walpole

Massachusetts State Police and the Walpole Police Department arrested eight individuals and issued 42 civil citations during a Sobriety Checkpoint in Walpole this past weekend.

Two Foxborough men were arrested and each charged with OUI liquor during a weekend Sobriety Checkpoint on Route 1 South in Walpole this past weekend, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Brian Hamel, 40, of Foxborough and Matthew Steel, 33 of Foxborough were each arrested and charged with OUI liquor during the sobriety checkpoint, which was conducted by Massachusetts State Police and the Walpole Police Department.

According to MSP, eight people, including Hamel and Steel, were part of five people arrested for OUI liquor/drugs during the weekend checkpoint. In addition to the OUI liquor/drug arrests, one other person was arrested for a misdemeanor, and two criminal summons were issued. Those three people were taken into custody, held by Walpole Police and ordered to appear in Wrentham District Court.

Police also wrote 42 civil citations during the checkpoint, which was held Friday, Aug. 3 into Saturday, Aug. 4.

"The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," Colonel Timothy P. Alben, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, said of the checkpoint in a press release last week.
