Obituary

Alfred F. DeSimone, of Foxboro died Friday, May 20 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He was 81. He was the beloved husband of the late Grace (Russo) DeSimone of Avellino Italy

Born in East Boston on January 20, 1930, he was the loving son of the late Antonio and Concetta (Bamonte) DeSimone.

Alfred attended Arlington High School, and then joined the army where he served three years during the Korean War. He continued on to a successful career with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Corrections during which time he attended Northeastern University’s Correctional Sciences Program. He retired in 1989, as the Associate Commissioner for the Department of Corrections, Health Services. Alfred was very involved in the Mansfield community and a key contributor to the Mansfield football programs. He was a co-founder and coach of the Mansfield Midget football program, a Grand Knight in Knights of Columbus and he was also president of the Professional and Correctional Social Workers Association. After he retired, Alfred dedicated his life’s passions to the formation and development of the Gridiron Club of Mansfield, where he coached and served as President for over 19 years. Alfred was the proud recipient of the inaugural Salute to Mansfield Award for his dedication to and involvement in the Mansfield community. In honor of Alfred’s service to the Mansfield Football program the annual Mansfield Football Gold Helmet Award was named after him.

Mr. DeSimone was the loving father of Marie and her companion Dan of Ayer. He was the cherished grandfather of Sean, his wife Kristen and their children Madison and Jameson of Pittsfield, MA, and Ryan and his wife Alicia of Sudbury. He is also survived by many friends.

Funeral from the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 N. Main Street, Mansfield on Wednesday May 25 at 8am. Followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Rte. 106) Mansfield at 9am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8pm. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
