“Purim in the Shtetl” is the theme for this year’s Purim celebration. This annual community celebration is held at the Canton Public High, 900 Washington St. in Canton, @ 12:30 p.m. 

The event will feature delicious foods of the shtetl, Megillah Reading & Sideshow, Klezmer band, hamentashen, Masquerade for adults and children and prizes for all who come in costume. Families can visit the village baker, tailor, jeweler, and farm and participate in activities and crafts.

The event is a community-wide program, and all are welcome to join, regardless of affiliation, background or place of residence. Free admission, Donations appreciated.

What is the holiday of Purim? 

The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown on Saturday, February 23rd and ends at nightfall on February 24th. 
The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia - 2436 years ago - from Haman's plot "to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day." 
The name of the holiday, Purim, literally means "lots," for Haman determined the day of the annihilation by drawing a lottery. 
It is observed by public readings of the Megillah, or Scroll of Esther, to recount the story of the Purim miracle, sending food gifts to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive Purim meal. 

The Chai Jewish Center is dedicated to providing the warmth of Judasim to all, regardless of background or affiliation.

At the party, you will have the opportunity to fulfill the 4 mitzvot of Purim 1) hear the Megilla. 2) give gifts of charity to the poor. 3) give gifts of food to friends  4) enjoy a festive meal.
