Foxborough High School Jazz Band Hitting Highest Note of Excellence this Season

Over February vacation, four members of the Foxborough High School jazz ensemble were selected to attend the Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival in New York City.

The students – senior pianist Alex Olsen, senior guitarist Kevin Scollins, junior bassist Alexa Dumont and junior drummer Nick Adair – submitted an audition recording in December and were selected as one of three high school finalists in the country to attend the competition.

“They began last summer putting together a set of music of Charles Mingus, writing their own arrangements, developing them, working on their improvisation and soloing,” said Foxborough Music Department Director Steve Massey.

At the competition, held Feb. 15-18, the students attended workshops, cavorted with other musicians and took in some of the city's many jazz clubs.

Decision on Electric Town Common Sign Could Come March 5

Foxborough officials are nearing a decision on the installation of electric signs at the town’s Common after attending two demonstrations earlier this week.

The Foxboro Lions Club - in coordination with LED sign company, Watchfire - conducted an afternoon and evening demonstration of the proposed electric sign at the south end of the Town Common Tuesday.

Following the demonstration, Foxborough Board of Selectmen chair James DeVellis declined comment on the project, saying he would rather wait until the board discusses the proposal publicly at the March 5 meeting.

“I have put the topic first on our March 5th agenda,” DeVellis said. “Not appropriate for me to comment before … [because I] want everyone to hear all sides and speak freely without the influence of how a board member is going to vote.”

DeVellis said a decision on the electric signs is expected to be made after the board discusses the project and reviews the recommendations of the Foxborough Historical Commission, Foxborough Town Historian Jack Authelet and public safety officials.

Jake n JOES to Open in Foxborough After ABCC Approves License

Jake n JOES is a step closer to opening its Foxborough location after selectmen Tuesday approved the sports grille’s application for an alteration of premises for the all alcohol restaurant license and application for approval of new stockholders.

The restaurant now awaits final approval from the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. Once approved by the ABCC, Jake n JOES says it will need “five to six days” to organize staff before opening for business at 25 Foxborough Blvd.

“As soon as we get it back from the ABCC we will need five or six days to get the staff back together that we’ve hired and get a little bit more training done,” said John H. Michelmore, counsel representing Jake n JOES.

The sports grille’s opening has been delayed several times but with the restaurant’s paperwork now in order and renovations on file, it appears the restaurant’s highly anticipated and long awaited opening is imminent.

“[The paperwork and licenses are] in perfect order,” said Town Manager Kevin Paicos. … “The applicant, the Nocera family, has actually not done a remodeling opening before. They’ve got a whole bunch of restaurants that are extremely well regarded and police chiefs in all of those communities have communicated they are incredibly responsible restaurant owners.”

Foxborough Boys' Basketball Season Ends Dramatically in Norwell Monday

NORWELL – In a state tournament game, one or two plays can often be the difference between advancing to the next round or ending your season.

That proved to be the case Monday night in Norwell as the Foxborough High School boys’ basketball team’s season came down to its final possession.

Trailing 41-38 with 15 seconds left in regulation, Foxborough head coach CJ Neely drew up the inbounds play to set his team up for a 3-pointer that would force overtime.

“We got the exact look we wanted,” Neely said of the last possession. “We ran the play and got [Tim O’Halloran] open for three and just didn’t knock it down.”

Foxborough quickly got the ball to Tim O’Halloran – who had already hit three 3-pointers in the game – in the corner for the game-tying three but the attempt clanked off the rim. Justin Zupanick chased down the rebound and found O’Halloran at the top of the key with five seconds left on the clock. O’Halloran tried to create space, working to the wing of the perimeter, before firing a contested shot at the buzzer that again clanked off the front of the rim.

Just like that, the game – and Foxborough’s season – ended in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional State Tournament.

Foxborough’s Offense Misfires in Season-Ending Loss to Holliston

Trailing Holliston 32-30 to start the fourth quarter, the Foxborough High School girls’ basketball team needed an offensive surge to keep their season alive.

It didn’t happen.

The Warriors managed four points in the fourth quarter and finished with just 12 in the second half of a 40-34 season-ending loss to the Panthers in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament Wednesday.

“The ball would just not fall for us [Wednesday],” said Foxborough head coach Lisa Downs. “I don’t know what our shooting percentage was but it was pretty darn low. We were taking quality shots … they just weren’t falling for us.”

Foxborough strung together an onslaught of quality chances in the final seconds of the third quarter but could not get any of them to fall. Down 32-30, the Warriors lined up a 3-pointer that bounced off the rim but FHS sophomore Katherine Tamulionis grabbed the offensive rebound to keep the possession alive. Despite the extra chances, Foxborough could not convert to tie the game before the buzzer.

It was just one of those nights, according to Downs.

Boston Bruins Would ‘Welcome Opportunity’ to Play Outdoor Game at Gillette Stadium

Could the Boston Bruins be bringing an NHL game to Foxborough in the near future?

Maybe.

Boston Bruins president Cam Neely appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger and Mazz afternoon program Tuesday to talk hockey. Among the topics discussed was an article originated from TheFourthPeriod.com reporting the NHL is considering adding multiple outdoor games in addition to the annual Winter Classic as early as the 2013-14 season.

Neely admitted he "knew nothing" about the Bruins' chances of hosting an outdoor game during a future NHL season but did say the organization would "be excited" to play in Foxborough if given the opportunity.

"We would certainly welcome it if we had the opportunity to [play at Gillette Stadium]," Neely said. "I think it was certainly a great experience at Fenway."

The Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston on Jan. 1, 2010, enjoying tremendous success as the NHL's highest rated regular season game of the year.

While not citing a specific venue, Neely did say that more space at a venue like Gillette Stadium would allow the organization to do a lot more things during the event.

"I think just the opportunities that we could do as an organization at a different venue, especially with more space outside the actual venue [would] able [us] to do a lot more things … primarily youth [hockey]. It would be exciting to try."

Foxborough to Combine Annual Town Election with Special State Primary on April 30

In an effort to avoid holding two elections within a six-day span, Foxborough’s Board of Selectmen agreed Tuesday to combine the annual town election with the state’s special primary election on April 30.

“Because of the resignation of Senator John Kerry it caused a special election,” Town Clerk Bob Cutler Jr. said. “We have the [state’s special] primary, which is on April 30th and then on June 25th is the actual [special] election so because of that the state decided to pass legislation that allows towns who have a town election within a 30-day period of either the primary or the special election to combine your town election with one of those elections.”

Foxborough’s annual town election was scheduled for May 6 – six days after the special primary election.

Cutler told selectmen that at least 28 towns in the Commonwealth have opted to combine elections under legislation passed on Jan. 31.

“The [towns] in the area [that have decided to combine elections] are Norfolk, Plainville and Wrentham,” said Cutler. “I know in speaking with the Town Clerk in Easton [Monday], they passed a vote to combine the elections in Easton.”

Cutler told selectmen combining these elections does not affect the town’s bylaw.

MIIA Insurance Awards Foxborough for ‘Excellent’ Loss Control and Risk Management

Foxborough’s Loss Control Committee – comprised of mostly department heads – has saved the town $120,000 since its inception in 2010 and was recently recognized by MIIA Insurance for its excellent work in “controlling losses and managing risk,” according to Jeff Siena, Loss Control Manager of MIIA Insurance.

“Every year we pick a small number of communities who we found have done an excellent job of controlling losses and managing the risk,” Siena said. “This year we picked nine towns and Foxborough was [one of them].”

Siena said Foxborough was chosen because of the Loss Control Committee’s dedication to identifying and preventing losses.

“I have been involved in the MIIA program for about 26 years now and this is the only town I know of currently that does this type of job [of going through every loss one by one every month and trying to figure out what caused it],” Siena said. “In recent memory there’s only been one other town that has been that specific.”

As a result of those efforts, the Loss Control Committee earned roughly $47,000 in MIIA premium credits in 2012. Siena said credits are earned by participating in MIIA rewards programs through training, documenting policies and efforts specific to loss control and risk management.

Siena, on behalf of MIIA, recognized the town for its loss control efforts by presenting Foxborough’s Board of Selectmen with a plaque on Feb. 5.

Students Make Real Discoveries Through Science from Scientists’ Interactive Programs

Since its inception in 2002, Science from Scientists has brought science and technology to life for thousands of students in the Greater Boston area, including Foxobrough.

Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle, CEO and Founder of Science from Scientists, says the organization’s goal is to give “all students the chance to experience the joy of doing real experiments, make real discoveries and appreciate how amazing our world is.”

Nearly 300 students gathered at The Hall at Patriot Place Presented by Raytheon in Foxborough last Thursday to interact with scientists and participate in engaging scientific and demonstrations.

Science from Scientists, according to its website, strives to improve science and technology awareness in local middle school and late elementary students.

“Our materials target fourth to eighth grade students,” the website said. “Science from Scientists typically works with more than two dozen schools, roughly 2,000 students annually, to instruct children with our STEM curriculum.”
