Foxborough High School Named 2013 Essentially Ellington Finalist

With over two decades of national achievement, the Foxborough High School music department has orchestrated a legacy of excellence that rivals any other in New England.

And while that level of success breeds high expectations, the achievements of the 2012 FHS jazz band is nothing short of extraordinary.

Less than a week after performing in the fifth annual Charles Mingus High School Festival & Competition in New York City, the FHS jazz band received word that it is one of 15 finalists to compete in the prestigious 18th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival this spring at the Lincoln Center in New York.

The Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival (EE) will take place at Frederick P. Rose Hall from May 10–12. Foxborough and the other finalists were chosen out of nearly 100 high school jazz bands across the country that entered the competition.

According to a community announcement published on Foxboro Cable Access' website, each school submitted recordings of three tunes performed from charts from Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington library.

Primo's Sandwich Shop Beat the Odds 25 Years Ago to Become Foxborough Mainstay

Chris Gunn never intended to open a Foxborough sandwich shop, but 25 years later, he’s still going strong.

“It’s a tough business, I knew coming in,” he said.

Gunn said he started 25 years ago at Primo's current location and he’s never looked back. He said originally, when he got out of college, he was working for an aviation company when a friend came to him with a business idea.

“He was the entrepreneur type,” Gunn said of his friend.

Gunn said he knew the risks of opening a small business and recalled that at the time, about 50 percent of restaurants closed within the first year. If the restaurant was fortunate enough to survive the first year, it was 75 percent more likely to close in the second.

“I was very fortunate to have good people around,” he said. “The kids here are great.”

Gunn said there were two things that helped him to be successful in the business:

  • Being heavily involved in the business
  • Adapting to local business trends

Selectmen Continue Jake n JOES Liquor License Hearing to Feb. 26

Foxborough’s Board of Selectmen continued Tuesday’s public hearing to review Jake n JOES’ application for alteration of premises for the establishment’s All Alcohol Restaurant License to Feb. 26.

Foxborough Town Manager Kevin Paicos said Jake n JOES needed to file an application for alteration of premises with the town after Building Inspector Bill Casbarra discovered the establishment’s floor plan did not match the one submitted with the All Alcohol Restaurant License.

“It was very different,” Paicos said of the floor plan. “The owners didn’t realize they needed to come in with a different plan so it’s just an unfortunate error because as many restaurants as they’ve owned, they’ve never opened a new place. It’s always been other restaurants that were already active. This is a new endeavor for them.”

Paicos said Tuesday’s hearing was continued to Feb. 26 because in addition to the alteration of premises application, Jake n JOES needed to submit a change in stock holdership because the restaurant added a stockholder since the liquor license was approved last August. The change in stock holdership application also  requires a public hearing.

“During the process between when they got the permit from the Board of Selectmen and when they actually constructed [the restaurant], a partner who has been involved in some other of their restaurants came forward and became a financial partner but the paperwork that had originally been submitted didn’t reflect this partner,” Paicos said. “So when the alteration of premises was being filled out to be given to the ABCC and the Board of Selectmen, [Jake n JOES’] counsel realized not only did the restaurant need a change in premises but needed a change in stock holdership. That was realized too late because that requires a hearing and we couldn’t get that advertised in time.”

Foxborough’s Snow Budget Maxed Out with Another Storm on the Way

February is proving to be an expensive month for Foxborough as two straight weekends of snow has wiped out the town’s snow and ice removal budget with another potential storm on the way.

The Blizzard of 2013 cost the town roughly $153,000 and last weekend’s snowfall further depleted the remaining funds.

“Whatever was left [in the snow and ice removal budget after the Blizzard of 2013] was eaten up last weekend,” Hill said. “So [Town Manager] Kevin [Paicos] and [Financial Director] Randy [Scollins] briefed the Advisory Committee [Wednesday night] so legally we can overspend for any additional snow and ice needs.”

That need could come as early as this weekend with local forecasts calling for another snowstorm to hit Foxborough.

Tree Tech ‘About 75 Percent’ Done Clearing 5 Acres for New Athletic Fields Behind Foxborough High

While many are enjoying school vacation this week, Tree Tech and Turf’s Up volunteers are busy clearing five acres of land behind Foxborough High School in preparation for the construction of new baseball, softball and field hockey fields as part of the community turf field project.

“We took advantage [of the school vacation] to get some work done to minimize disruption for the kids,” said Turf’s Up president Jim DeVellis.

DeVellis said despite a “short disruption” from the Blizzard of 2013, volunteers from Tree Tech are about 75 percent complete with clearing the five acres behind the high school, an important step before construction on the actual turf field can begin.

“Once the back is done and after the spring sports are complete, Turf’s Up’s efforts move to the front of the school,” DeVellis said.

The town’s Playing Fields Committee will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. inside the Booth Recreation Building office with community sports leaders to review and discuss the plan for the turf field, which will be constructed at the site of the current baseball and softball fields at Foxborough High School.

VIDEO: Foxborough Girls’ Basketball Closes Out Hopkinton in Fourth Quarter to Win Warrior Classic

The Foxborough High School girls’ basketball team proved Tuesday it’s ready for the postseason after a 48-41 win over Hopkinton in the Warrior Winter Classic championship game.

“[We] showed [we] could maintain composure going into the fourth quarter when [we] were down to a great Hopkinton team and [we] really stepped it up so I am really proud of [the team],” said Foxborough head coach Lisa Downs.

Defense ruled the first quarter as both teams struggled to gain any offensive momentum in the opening eight minutes. Foxborough managed to gain a 10-7 lead on Hopkinton by quarter’s end but Hopkinton chipped away at deficit in the second and trailed the Warriors by just one (19-18) at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Hillers as Hopkinton took advantage of several Foxborough miscues to go up on the Warriors, 32-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

“About 75 percent of the game I was very happy with [the effort] and that 25 percent killed us,” Downs said. “We just hurt ourselves. We executed a perfect fast break and then turned the ball over three times in a row. We would take one step forward and a couple steps backward.”

But Foxborough remained calm in the final eight minutes, exhibiting the type of mental toughness and grit required to be successful in the state tournament.

“We were able to clean it up in the fourth quarter, which is what we have done in the last couple of games,” Downs said. “We just have to execute a lot better earlier.”

After trailing 39-37 with 4:43 remaining in the fourth quarter, Foxborough outscored Hopkinton, 9-4 the rest of the way to beat the Hillers, 48-41 and claim the 2013 Warrior Winter Classic Championship.

Foxborough Girls’ Basketball Steamrolls Lunenburg; Readies for Hopkinton in Warrior Classic Title Game

Foxborough High School girls’ basketball coach Lisa Downs said when her team is firing on all cylinders they are “pretty fantastic to watch.”

That was true Monday night.

The Warriors (14-5) turned in a complete game Monday, cruising past visiting Lunenburg, 85-37 in the opening round of the Warrior Classic tournament.

“[We] came out executing and played smart defense,” Downs said. “Our press was working much better [Monday] then it had been last week. … Offense rotated the ball in and out and our shot selection was much better.”

It is rare that a high school basketball team can put a game away in the second quarter, but that’s exactly what the Warriors did when they outscored Lunenburg, 29-5 in the second frame to take a 48-18 lead into halftime.

“The second quarter we definitely opened the gates and the starting five was doing everything I know they can do,” Downs said.

Foxborough’s insurmountable lead grew bigger in the second half as the Warriors’ reserves took full advantage of their playing time, outscoring the Knights 20-9 in the third quarter and 17-10 in the fourth.
