Virginia Earthquake Rocks the East Coast, Felt in Foxborough

The 5.9 scale quake was felt as far north as Foxborough and Boston.

At about 2 p.m. Wednesday a 5.9 scale earthquake hit the East Coast, centered in .

Reports of tremors are coming in from as far north as Foxborough and the Boston area, more than 500 miles away from the center of the quake.

Massachusetts State Police received dozens of calls from residents reporting shaking, but there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake happened at 1:51 p.m. with an epicenter nine miles south of Mineral, Virginia and had a depth of 1 kilometer.

According to reports from the New York Times and other media outlets, the White House, Capitol building and Pentagon were evacuated due to the quake Tuesday afternoon.

The quake was felt here in Foxborough as well.

"[I felt] it from the 3rd floor of Foxboro Co. (Invensys). My desk shook for a few seconds," said Zak Johnson on twitter. 

Earthquakes are uncommon in New England, however, not nonexistent. One of the last reported earthquakes was a 2.3 magnitude-event in July 2011 near Brooksville, Maine.
