Patriots' Dennard Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail for Assaulting Police Officer, Resisting Arrest

New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was sentenced in a Nebraska court Thursday morning after he was convicted in February of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard will see jail time for assaulting a police officer following an altercation with a fellow University of Nebraska student in April 2012, according to CBS Boston.

Dennard was sentenced to 30 days in jail and 24 months of probation Thursday in a Nebraska courtroom after being convicted in February of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

According to the report, Dennard “will also have to serve 1,000 hours of community service” – but “will be credited for three days of jail time served.”

The second year pro’s 30-day sentence will begin on March 31, 2104 – which means unless Dennard is suspended by the NFL or the Patriots – he will not miss any time on the field. CBS Boston reports Dennard will be able to travel back and forth from Nebraska to Foxborough for work — but any other travel will need approval.

Dennard faced a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the assault charge, which is a felony, according to a Patriots Football Weekly blog post in February. The resisting arrest charge is a misdemeanor but could have resulted in an additional year of prison and $1,000 fine.
