National Weather Service Warns of Hurricane Irene

Hurricane may impact Foxborough over weekend.

Hurricane Irene, a major Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 109 mph as of Friday morning, is taking a path toward southern New England, the National Weather Service is predicting.

The NWS says Irene's track remains uncertain, but the possibility of heavy rain, flooding and strong, damaging wind exists for the weekend for the Foxborough area.

Meteorologists at WHDH say humidity levels will also be high on Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to hit North Carolina's Outer Banks on Saturday afternoon. From there, the storm will move up the Eastern Seaboard and will cause rain and heavy winds from Washington, D.C., to New York City before reaching the Boston area Sunday with tropical storm conditions.

Foxborough safety officials are already preparing for the possible storm on Sunday. Fire Chief Roger Hatfield spoke with all the department heads Wednesday about the storm, and will be monitoring closely the track of the storm over the next few days.

Safety officials are urging residents to purchase supplies in case of power outages such as flashlights, water, portable radio batteries and re-fill propane cooking tanks. Residents should also check and fill prescriptions if possible and cell phone batteries should be fully charged. Head to your local grocery store to stock up on dry foods such as granola bars, dried fruits, peanut butter, bread, cookies and crackers.

The forceful storm is likely to cause hundreds of flights to be canceled and many delays through this weekend. As of Thursday, airlines are offering passengers the option of free re-booking for trips to the East Coast.
