Foxborough Water Department to Begin Flushing Hydrants on April 22

Foxborough Water Department will be conducting a nighttime hydrant flushing program beginning on Monday, April 22 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., weather permitting.

The Foxborough Water Department will begin an aggressive schedule to flush hydrants on Monday, April 22 to remove iron and manganese buildup - which produces brown water in the system – from the water mains.

Water Department Superintendent Robert Worthley said removal of this buildup “is essential for the long-term solution” to the brown water issues many residents have been experiencing in town.

In an effort to better communicate the potential for brown water with residents, Worthley reached out to local media and has set up notices on the town website (click here).

“Communication is key and we are trying much harder to get the message out to residents to keep them informed of what’s going on,” Worthley said.

According to the water department’s public notice, the town will be conducting a nighttime hydrant flushing program beginning on Monday, April 22 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., weather permitting. Worthley hopes to continue that schedule through the spring.

The flushing may result in brown water as the iron and manganese settled at the bottom of the pipes is stirred up and removed from the system.

“Residents are advised that there may be some temporary discoloration of water [brown] or loss of pressure,” Worthley said. “Caution should be used during this time when using filtering systems, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.”

Worthley encourages residents to frequently check the “upper left hand corner” of the town’s website site under “Water Department News & Notices” for current information regarding the flushing program.

“This is where you will be able to find maps of the expected areas of flushing, along with the anticipated schedule,” Worthley said.

The schedule will be determined by the weather and the amount of discolored water resulting from the flushing.

If you have any questions, Worthley asks you contact the Water Department at (508) 543-1209.
