Foxborough Volleyball Plays Home Opener in Renovated Gym

Foxborough High School celebrated the opening match at their newly renovated gymnasium, however the Warriors fell to the Franklin Panthers in a 3-0 sweep.

After months of work and renovations, Foxboro High School celebrated the reopening of the school gym with its first event since its closing. The work, which had been ongoing since the spring season, saw the gym receive a new floor along with new banners. With the first home volleyball game of the season, the gym saw its first action since last winter.

“It looks nice, very bright in here now. It’s all beautiful. I think everything went well except we loss,” said Warriors Head Coach Dan Damish.

Damish, who is also the former girls basketball coach for Foxboro, spent many hours on the old court and hopes to spend more on the new one.

“It was fun playing on the new floor and it's a lot of memories in here so hopefully the girls can put a lot new memories," he said.

Unfortunately, the new memories will have to wait as the Warriors fell to the Franklin Panthers in a 3-0 sweep.

From the start it looked liked it would be a tough challenge for the inexperienced Warriors. Playing with a team of new varsity players, it was going to be a challenge to face the undefeated Panthers.

“We only had two kids that saw a lot of varsity experience last year. Even though we didn’t score a lot of points, I saw a lot of improvement from the team as a whole,” said Damish of his young team.

Despite keeping the score close early on in the first match, the Warriors could not hold on and found themselves down 1-0 after falling 25-13 in the opening set.

While putting up a good effort, Franklin was simply too experienced and took the next sets 25-12 and 25-10 to win 3-0.

It was a tough loss for Foxboro. Playing one of the better volleyball teams in the league, coach Damish was able to find the positives despite the loss.

“They did good against a very good team,” said Damish, “We’re trying to get to that level. I think we’re going to.”

With a young team it may take a while, but the Warriors are finding that they are improving with each game and practice.

“They’re starting to trust their teammates. It’s going to take time. I think it’s going to take us awhile to get to 100% because really we have 8-9 new kids,” said Damish.

After the loss, the Warriors find themselves at 2-3 with all games being league play.

Next up of the Warriors will be a matchup with the other Warriors of the Hockomock League. Foxboro will host King Philip Regional High School on Friday Sept. 23 at 4:45pm.
