Foxborough Fire Department Rings Engine Bell 26 Times for Newtown Victims

The Foxborough Fire Department observed a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday in memory of the 26 victims of last week's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Foxborough firefighters gathered outside of their Chestnut Street firehouse just before 9:30 a.m. Friday to join the nation in a moment of silence for the victims of last week's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Overcast skies and rain represented a sorrowful nation, still hurting deeply from the unimaginable act of violence that claimed the lives of 20 children - none older than seven years old - and six adults in the Newtown, Conn. community.

As Foxborough firefighters stood quietly in front of the firehouse, the bell of Engine 24 rang 26 times - once for the memory of each life lost on that fateful morning one week ago today.

The moment of silence observed in Foxborough expanded across the Commonwealth as Massachusetts joined its Connecticut neighbors in solemnly remembering the victims of the Newtown, Conn. shooting.

Gov. Deval Patrick led a remembrance Friday at the Garden of Peace in Boston at 9:30 a.m., the time of the Sandy Hook Elementary School killings in Newtown, Conn., a week ago today, according to 7News.

In Newtown, residents and elected officials honored the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook School shooting with a moment of silence held out on the steps of Edmond Town Hall, according to Newtown, Conn. Patch.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy declared Friday a statewide "Day of Mourning."

According to Newtown Patch, The only sound heard at Friday's observance - over the whipping wind - "was the ringing of Trinity Episcopal Church's bell. It rang 26 times over a period of about seven minutes — once for each of the 26 victims of the shooting (20 children and six adults).

On Thursday, hundreds from the Foxborough community gathered inside St. Mary's Church for a quiet service of prayer and reflection for the 28 killed in last week's shooting. Candles were lit, one-by-one, for each of the victims, including the gunman, Adam Lanza.
