5 Things: Local Boy Chosen as Dana-Farber Patient Partner, Selectmen Approve Liquor Requests, Accept Donations & More

1. Expect Rain Thursday in Foxborough

Today’s weather in Foxborough, according to the National Weather Service based in Taunton, calls for rain, mainly after 2 p.m. High near 67. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Thursday night: Rain. Low around 53. Northeast wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

2. Foxborough Boy Chosen as Dana-Farber Patient Partner

Jimmy Fund patient, Jayden Dalton, 10 of Foxborough, has been named one of the patient partners for the Old Navy, Aubuchon Hardware and BURGER KING® “A Chance for Kids & Families” program.

Jayden lives with his parents, Steve and Sheila and his siblings. All proceeds from this program benefit adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Jayden was diagnosed at 3 months old with a brain tumor and has been a patient at Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic for most of his life. The tumor has caused him to have limited eye sight. He is in the fourth grade at Taylor Elementary School. Jayden enjoys playing video games, watching sports and spending time with his family.

He has an older sister, Jasmine, and two younger siblings, Christian and Candyce. When Jayden grows up he “wants to be a difference- maker in the world.”

With each contribution, customers will receive a promotion card guaranteed to be a winner with prizes ranging from an all-inclusive trip from TNT Vacations Powered by Funjet Vacations, American Airlines miles, theme park tickets, as well as prizes from Old Navy, Aubuchon Hardware and BURGER KING.

Now in its 14th year, the “A Chance for Kids & Families” program has raised more than $11.6 million for Dana-Farber.  A Chance for Kids & Families helps fund adult and pediatric cancer research and care at Dana-Farber. The innovative research benefits cancer patients in New England as well as patients around the world.

Old Navy (June 2-29) and Aubuchon Hardware (June 3-July 7) stores in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Connecticut and BURGER KING restaurants (July 29-September 2) will also be participating.

 “It is because of the compassion and generosity of companies like Old Navy, Aubuchon Hardware and BURGER KING restaurants and their customers that we are able to move forward in our quest to effectively treat cancer, with the ultimate goal of developing cures,” said Suzanne Fountain, director of the Jimmy Fund.

3. Foxborough Resident Wins Sage School’s Pastuszenski Prize

The Sage School’s former Chair of the Board of Trustees, Erin Pastuszenski, has awarded 2013 graduate Sophie Philibert, of Foxborough, with the Pastuszenski Prize.

The Pastuszenski Prize is given annually to a person within the Sage community who demonstrates a deep commitment to academic excellence, and a dedication to giving back to the community. 

Named after Erin Pastuszenski, Board Chair from 1998-2007 and parent of two Sage graduates, this prize honors Erin's passion for gifted students, academic rigor, social consciousness, and community service.

5. Selectmen Approve Liquor Requests, Accept Several Donations

Foxborough’s Board of Selectmen approved the following requests:

  • One-day beer and wine license for June 15th at Bay Colony – Orpheum Theatre for Maureen Hancock’s Postcards from Heaven.
  • One-day beer and wine license for a Donor Thank You Event on June 20th by the Friends of the Boyden Library. The event will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Boyden Library on 10 Bird St. The purpose of the event is to thank donors who have made substantial contributions to the Beyond Books Boyden Library Capital Campaign. The event will be catered by Nexdine LLC.
  • Block party permit on Easton Avenue for Saturday, July 27th (rain date is Sunday, July 28) starting at 3 p.m. between 22 Eastman Ave. and 9 Eastman Ave.
  • Two-year Hackie License for Anwar A. Saliba
  • $200 donation from Foxboro Federal Savings to the Recreation Gift Fund
  • $217 donation from Stephen Gulley to the Animal Control Gift Fund
  • $250 donation from Foxboro Cable Access to the Library Gift Fund for renewal of the museum pass at the JFK Museum
