Two Shot Outside Stoughton Nightclub; Police Urge Selectmen to Take “Aggressive Action” Against Club’s Licenses

In the wake of the early morning shooting which took place outside Whiplash nightclub on Wyman St. in Stoughton April 21, Police Chief Paul Shastany and Executive Officer Robert Devine appeared before the Stoughton Board of Selectmen April 23 and recommended selectmen take "aggressive" and "bold" action against the club's licenses.

Devine highlighted a number of violent incidents at the club since July, which culminated in a string of recent activity which included a large brawl with multiple arrests on April 14 and the shooting, which sent two to the hospital on April 21.

"It is a fact that Whiplash, whether knowingly or unknowingly, is attracting known criminal gangs from Boston,” Shastany said. “We cannot tolerate a business that brings violence to our town."

The Chief asked the Board to revoke the club's entertainment license; suspend the alcohol license for a long period of time; and to modify the hours of operation and service of alcoholic beverages by imposing a closing time of 11 p.m.

Selectmen, needing to give the business 10 days advance notice, voted to hold a hearing May 8 to decide the status of Whiplash's licenses.

The Norton School Committee has requested a town meeting warrant article designed to allow them to fund repairs needed in the Henri A. Yelle gym floor.

According to committee members, a pipe underneath the gym floor burst and water damaged the wood in the floor.

This is the second time Norton has needed to repair the gym floor in two years.

Attleboro

Vice Principal Demoted Following School Lunch Scandal

Coelho Middle School's assistant principal has lost her title due to her alleged role in the school lunch scandal that gained national attention. Attleboro school district Superintendent Pia Durkin released a statement saying Susan Fortin was suspended five days without pay and will be reassigned as a teacher.

Attleboro made national headlines earlier this month when it was revealed 35 to 45 students who had insufficient funds in their accounts were denied lunch or forced to throw their food away. In response, district food contractor Whitsons fired four employees. Parents, including one who spoke at a recent school committee meeting, said Fortin made an announcement during lunch saying students with insufficient account balances would not receive meals.

“I have concluded that the Attleboro administrator, whose oversight of the lunchroom was her responsibility, did not question the decisions that the Whitsons staff made that day nor did she exercise good judgement on behalf of the students she was charged to care for,” wrote Durkin in a letter this week to parents.

Seniors Could Get Answer Soon on Future of Center

Where Seekonk's seniors will meet and participate in programs while they wait for the voter-approved center near Town Hall to be built was expected to be determined at a rare Friday night selectmen meeting. However, the session was canceled Friday morning due to the death in a selectman’s family. The issue will be discussed at the regular Wednesday meeting.

Selectmen voted earlier this year to move the seniors from the building on Pleasant Street that has been cited for several code violations and safety issues to a temporary location at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Arcade Avenue. This decision was met with protest by some people who wanted other options explored.
