Foxboro YMCA to Open Outdoor Aquatics Center Thursday

The Hockomock Area YMCA's Invensys Foxboro Branch will be celebrating the grand opening of the Spier Family Outdoor Aquatics Center Thursday.

On Thursday, just in time for record high temperatures, the Hockomock Area YMCA will be opening the Spier Family Outdoor Aquatics Center with a grand opening ceremony and celebration at the Invensys Foxboro Branch at 67 Mechanic St.

The ceremony, which begins at 3 p.m., will include a “short speaking program and recognition of the Spier family,” according to a press release issued to Foxborough Patch.

The Hockomock Area YMCA will be celebrating the leadership, vision and generosity of the Spier family as it opens the outdoor family aquatics center that features a 25-yard pool, changing rooms and improvements to the outdoor activity area at the Invensys Foxboro Branch, according to the press release.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Spier family, our shared vision will become a reality in June,” said Ed Hurley, President of the Hockomock Area YMCA. “Alex and Sonja’s commitment to their community and their support of kids and families served by our YMCA is an inspiration.”

Alex and Sonja Spier, who provided a challenge grant to get folks involved in the fundraising effort, recently toured the site.

“We are so pleased at the progress of the outdoor aquatic center,” said Alex Spier. “We look forward to coming to the Y to help celebrate the grand opening.”

The project cost $913,665 and was “made possible by the generosity of the Spier family,” according to the press release. The YMCA, with the help of the Spier Family Challenge, raised $800,000 as of June 4. Volunteers from Foxborough, Mansfield, and Sharon helped raise the funds needed to meet the Spier Challenge in time for Thursday’sopening.

This summer, 400 children a day will take part in Summer Camp at the Foxboro Y and the pool will be available for YMCA families to enjoy.

“We are very proud of our summer camps and the positive impact a Y summer camp experience has on children,” said Greg Spier, YMCA Board chair. “The Invensys Foxboro Branch has become a resource for thousands of area children and families providing a place to be active together.”

Expected to be in attendance at Thursday’s event are YMCA Board members, donors and staff along with business and community leaders, local officials and friends of the Hockomock Area YMCA.
