Bites Nearby: Waxy O'Connor's

A review of Waxy O'Connor's Irish Pub and Restaurant.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Foxborough Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out.

Here's this week's choice:

Waxy O'Connor's

Overview: Waxy O’Connor’s is known for it’s authentic Irish décor and cuisine. Patrons also enjoy live music, karaoke nights, and a cozy fireplace, making Waxys much more than just your average Irish pub.

Decor: The Waxy O'Connor's pub exudes an authentic Irish décor and atmosphere. The custom “millwork” was designed and built in Ireland. The rich mahogany interior creates an authentic experience for diners who may soon forget, once entering, if they are in an upscale restaurant or Irish pub. The bar is 100 feet long, perfect for busy Friday and Saturday nights where drinks are being served at a quick pace. 6 50-inch LED flat screen TV’s line the bar, making it the perfect spot to catch a big game. There are also four dining areas that surround the bar. A fireplace creates a cozy, upscale atmosphere for diners.

A stage on the lower level of the restaurant is used for live music and karaoke. Waxy O'Connor's also boosts a “keg room” that shows off all the draft beers that patrons can choose from. On warm days, management opens their outdoor patio, complete with it’s own bar.

The Drinks: Waxy O'Connor's offers an extensive beer list as well as an assortment of draft beers on tap. If you are looking to sample a beer from Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, England or the U.S, Waxys has got it covered. A variety of wine and cocktails land the bar list as well.

Appetizers: Waxys offers an array of appetizers with an Irish twist. In the mood for nachos? Waxys offers both cheese nachos ($7.95) and Irish nachos, which are presented as chips with bacon, sour cream and diced tomatoes ($7.95). Onion rings served with Guinness ketchup (5.95) and Irish spring rolls filled with chopped corned beef, cabbage and potato with sweet mustard sauce ($7.95) round out this Irish themed appetizer menu. Contemporary American food items are also offered including potato skins ($7.95) crab cakes (8.95) and chicken tenders ($7.95).

Entrees: Waxys presents a wide variety of hearty entrees ranging from pizza topped with mashed potatoes, shepherd’s beef and cheddar cheese ($9.95) to Rosemary chicken served with whipped potatoes and cream spinach ($13.95).  A variety of sliders are also offered including Cheeseburger ($5.95), Sloppy Joe ($4.95) and Buffalo Chicken sliders ($5.95). Traditional Irish fair gets its own piece of the menu.  Their famous “Bangers and Mash” is described as “crispy Irish sausages, mashed potatoes, onions and brown gravy” ($12.95).  Other traditional Irish fair includes Corn beef and cabbage ($11.95), Irish breakfast ($12.95) and Chicken Pot Pie ($11.95). Sandwiches are served with your choice of regular fries or sweet potato fries. (Tip: If you enjoy sweet potato fries, these are some of the best in the area).

Sides:  Complete your meal with one of Waxy O'Connor's many side dishes. Sides range from blue cheese mashed potatoes, basmati rice, mushy peas, roasted red potatoes, and the daily vegetable. All sides are $2.95 each.

Desserts: A traditional Waxy O'Connor's meal of Irish nachos, Bangers&Mash and sweet potatoes fries cannot be complete without the P.B & J dessert bomb. Waxy O'Connor's deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry syrup ($5.95). If Irish whiskey is more your style, sample the baked apples a la mode. Apples, brown sugar and Irish whiskey are baked inside a pastry ($5.95).

Service: Pleasant crew and great food. Servers are bubbly and add to this fun loving atmosphere. Meals and drinks were served on time and exceeded my expectations.
