Foxborough’s Orpheum Theatre: A Gem of Interest and Fun

The Orpheum Theatre looks to it's future and hopes to aid in revitalizing downtown Foxborough.

If you ask anyone in the town of Foxboro to describe a gem you may get several different answers.  Someone may describe a gem in the context of a mineral which has to be cut and polished to make jewelry or other adornments; another may respond that it is something rare that may have aesthetic value.  Metaphorically speaking, Foxboro has a hidden gem located in the heart of downtown.

I recently had the good fortune of attending a show at the Orpheum produced by Bay Colony Productions and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and professionalism of the young troupe who presented a foot-stomping, hand-clapping performance of Shake, Rattle and Broadway.  This entertaining musical revue featured Broadway songs that spanned the 1930’s through musicals of today.  Best of all, it was all local talent supporting our community. It is so refreshing to see a local independent theatre such as this flourish, especially in these tough times.

Beer and wine are offered during comedy nights. I was also very pleased they had hot tea as well. Tickets usually range from $18.00 - $24.00, which is a far cry from ticket prices in the city. The concession stand sells freshly popped popcorn, and the snack bar has the most affordable prices on snacks I have ever seen in a theater; $2.00 for all the candy.  Where will you ever find those prices at another theater?

I sat down recently with Bill Cunningham, Executive Director of Bay Colony Productions to chat about his involvement with the Orpheum and his vision for its future.  Cunningham's passion for the Orpheum as well as theater and arts in general, quickly comes across.  He has worked tirelessly since his return from Las Vegas in 1999 to help restore, vitalize and offer the Foxboro community performing arts through both high quality performances and devoted educational programs. I was unaware of the programs offered right here in Foxboro. Programs offered include year-round theater classes, professional quality stage plays, musical theatre, dance, musical events, youth theatre programs, charity events, concerts, movies birthday parties with DVD’s and family entertainment, just to name a few. He also offers school vacation venues to youth and families who are unwilling or cannot make the trek to Boston or Providence. The theatre company offers productions that appeal to a wide range of audiences, featuring extremely talented performers of all ages.

Cunningham is planning an “Open House” of sorts soon so that the community can come and get involved.  Cunningham would love to expand and utilize what the community is looking for. He is willing to listen, get involved and offer more services.  Currently, he is looking to expand his Board and would also love to have a few more volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

I asked Cunningham about what differences there are between his theater and other theaters in the area.  He responded that it is in some degree, giving back to the downtown area (a topic that is on many of the local businesses minds these days) hopefully, beginning the process of revitalizing the downtown and bring business back to the center of Foxboro.  This young man is civic and community minded.  He is hoping that citizens of the area will want to come to the center of town and keep business in the area.

The Orpheum will be home to Foxboro’s Haunted House this year.  If the weather is chilly, it will be a perfect venue for the little ones who are looking to stay warm, have fun and get some candy.  There will be three floors of trick or treating with many surprises for young and old alike.  Bill shared with me that last year over 2,000 trick or treaters strolled (or should I say, shuddered) through the theater.

The theatre was designed to provide maximum flexibility and convenience to all of the performing arts. The comfortable auditorium seats 427 and allows each patron complete visibility of the stage. The theatre is climate controlled and is handicapped accessible to audiences. The computerized box office is attended 4 days a week, except during performances when it is available 6 days a week. The fully-equipped concession stand provides refreshments. The Orpheum gallery in the upper lobby hosts the works of local artists. This space also provides a comfortable meeting area for patrons and guests and can be easily used for meetings and receptions.
