Free Screening of Embraceable

As the kick-off event for Williams
Syndrome Awareness Week (May 5-13), the Williams Syndrome Association is
sponsoring a free viewing of the documentary film Embraceable by John Kent at
Bethany Congregational Church in Foxboro on Sunday, May 6th at 2pm. Embraceable, a film about the lives of
people with Williams Syndrome, premiered at the 2011 Thessaloniki International
Film Festival in Greece as part of the Festival’s tribute to the International
Special Olympics.

Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic deletion affecting 1 in
10,000 births. Sometimes referred to as “cocktail party syndrome”, people with
Williams Syndrome display a remarkable knack for storytelling, a drive to
interact with others, and a passion for music. People with Williams have an
“elfish” look including wide mouths, upturned noses, and a starburst pattern to
the iris. These gifts often mask the underlying medical, cognitive, and social
challenges of living with Williams Syndrome.

In John Kent’s director’s notes on the film, he states, “While
many of us try with only modest success to be present in the moment, live
authentically, love unconditionally and judge not, every person I’ve met with
Williams Syndrome lives this way—naturally. It is terribly ironic that the
media portrays people with Williams Syndrome as fascinating oddities when, in
fact, what truly separates them from the masses is their indelible humanity.”

The 50-minute film will be followed by a reception in the
fellowship hall. Bethany Congregational Church is located at 3 Rockhill Street,
Foxboro, just off Foxboro Common. The screening is part of a week of events for
raising awareness of Williams Syndrome, culminating in the Southern New England
Walk for Williams Syndrome in Bird Park, Walpole, on May 12th.
