Weekend: CrossFit Torque Fundraiser, Science of Sports Fair, Hazardous Waste Collection Day & More

1. Expect a Sunny Weekend in Foxborough with Highs in the 60s

Saturday’s weather in Foxborough, according to the National Weather Service based in Taunton, calls for sunny, with a high near 62. Northeast wind 7 to 13 mph. Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 39. East wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 64. Northeast wind around 7 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 39. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.

2. CrossFit Torque to Hold Fundraiser for Marathon Victims Saturday

CrossFit Torque will be holding a fundraiser workout for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. Pre-registration was required to participate in the event but donations can still be made using this link: https://crossfittorque.zenplanner.com/zenplanner/portal/event.cfm?EventId=EB42D258-78E3-4531-9060-3D49687DADA2. The workout will be 26 minutes and 20 seconds long (“26.2″) and it will involve running. It will be a partner workout. Minimum donations of $25 will be collected at registration and proceeds will be donated to those in need. Spectators are encouraged to come cheer everyone on.

3. Science of Sports Fair is Sunday at Gillette Stadium

For the last five months, students from 17 New England Boys & Girls Clubs have participated in the fifth annual “Science of Sports” Science Fair, a youth outreach and mentoring program that uses sports as a context to teach the principles of math and science.

On Sunday that interactive and exciting program is coming to Foxborough with more than 120 “Science of Sports” middle school students from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire Boys & Girls Clubs and their Raytheon mentors competing at The Putnam Club East of Gillette Stadium.

Students will present their projects for judging, many of which will include dramatic visual demonstrations of science specific principles. Each member of the three top winning teams, which will be announced during the program, will receive a $1,000 (first place), $750 (second place) or $500 (third place) scholarship.

The Kraft Group Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft, New England Patriots offensive tackle Nate Solder and Raytheon Company chairman and CEO William H. Swanson will judge the projects and award prizes in the science fair.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Putnam Club East of Gillette Stadium. Judging begins at 12:20 p.m. with the presentation of awards scheduled for 1 p.m.                               

4. Patriot Place Events

Here’s what’s happening around Patriot Place this weekend:

(Saturday) 9:30 p.m. - The Shana Stack Band at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill: The Shana Stack Band, excites their audiences with their high energy, high impact show, featuring multi-national award winning vocalist Shana Stack.

(Sunday) - Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at CBS Scene: Enjoy Cinco de Mayo Weekend Drink Specials all weekend long at CBS Scene.

5. Foxborough’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is Saturday

Foxborough will be holding its annual household hazardous waste collection day on Saturday, May 4th at the Highway Garage from 9 a.m. to noon.

Proof of residency is required to participate in the household hazardous waste day.

The following items will be accepted:

From the house:

  • Arts & crafts supplies
  • Dry cleaning fluids
  • Furniture cleaning polish
  • Drain cleaners
  • Oven cleaners
  • Floor cleaners
  • Metal polish
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Thermometers
  • Lighter fluids
  • Rechargeable batteries

From the garage:

  • Motor oil
  • Engine degreaser
  • Brake fluid
  • Gasoline
  • Antifreeze
  • Auto batteries
  • Waste fuels (kerosene)
  • Transmission fluid
  • Car wax
  • Driveway sealer

From the yard:

  • Cesspool cleaners
  • Pool chemicals
  • Insecticides
  • Solvents – adhesives

From the workbench:

  • Stains – varnishes – strippers
  • Oil based paints only
  • Wood preservatives
  • Solvents – adhesives

The following items will not be accepted:

  • Latex paint
  • Explosive materials: Ammunition, fireworks and explosives
  • Propane tanks
  • Smoke detectors
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Gas cylinders
  • Prescription medicines and syringes
  • Medical waste
  • Commercial / industrial waste
  • Asbestos and asbestos products

A reminder that motor oils can be brought to the Highway Garage Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Oil based paints/thinners/stains can be brought to the Highway Garage on Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
