Granite Towers Arrive at 9-11 Memorial in Foxborough

The 9-11 Memorial in Foxborough took a big step towards completion as the granite towers were delivered and put in place.

Over 6,000 pounds of granite and 6,000 thanks you. Those are the numbers and words that were repeatedly spoken Wednesday as the granite towers for the September 11 Memorial in Foxborough were delivered.

Chris Mitchell, organizer of , along with friends, family, community members, Foxboro Safety officials, and Selectmen Lynda Walsh and Mark Sullivan, stood in excitement on the grounds of the Foxborough Public Safety building, as a crane, donated by Tree Tech, carefully lifted down the granite memorial towers onto their new home in Foxborough.

"This memorial was all built by volunteers, which is awesome" said Mitchell.

Sullivan of All Phase Concrete Inc, stopped by the project Wednesday to view the new progress. Mitchell said Sullivan, along with many other volunteers including, John Rhoads, retired engineer, Blueview Nurseries, Tree Tech Inc., and C Mac Inc. have all been gracious in donating their time to the project. The Memorial design is the work of John Ricker of Morse & Beggs Monument Co. in North Attleborough, who also donated his time.

In fact, so many volunteers have helped out that Mitchell says he needs to make a long list in order to leave no one out.

"We would be working [on the Memorial] and people walking by would stop and say I want to help!" he said.

Ricker, who worked on the design, summed up his thoughts Wednesday afternoon after seeing the granite towers lowered safely into their spots.

"It makes me happy," he said. "Glad I could help."

The September 11 Memorial will not only be a place to reflect and remember, it will also be an educational experience, especially for those children that were not yet born or were too young at the time. The site will feature three granite tablets with bronze plaques that describe what happened on Sept. 11 in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. A piece of steel from the World Trade Center Artifacts Project will sit between two granite towers, representing the World Trade Center Towers.

The dedication of the Foxboro Never Forgets Memorial will take place on September 10 at 5:30 p.m at the Foxborough Public Safety Building, 8 Chestnut Street. Dedication and remarks will be held rain or shine.
