The first thing TurfsUp wanted to do on the first day of construction was to say a big THANK YOU to the many people that made this community field a reality. A simple gathering by a bunch of kids led by our Recreation Department gave us an opportunity to say thanks for doing something nice for them and for our generations to come. With no adults, politicians or speeches, the kids used simple signs to get the point across.
Starting four years ago, our vision, design and fundraising efforts were recognized by Mr. Kraft and the NFL-LISC’s organization and they generously awarded a matching grant to get us about ½ way. Without this community commitment, there would be no field. Through the down years of the economy, we saw kids donating their birthday party money, writing essays for meaningful grants and holding raffles, whiffle ball tournaments and homecoming concerts. We saw Founders Day pie throwing booths, car washes, T-shirt sales and lemonade stands. Many residents and companies made cash and services donations at a time when we all struggled, too many to list here but every penny tracked on our website www.foxboroughturfsup.org. In the fall, our School Committee and Superintendent shared this vision and sponsored a Town Meeting article to complete the effort through appropriation of the unused High School renovation budget as that project came to an end. Residents then raised their hands at Town Meeting to support the project and this Community Field will stand as a tribute to a great community that came together to accomplish something in the most efficient, collaborative and forward thinking way we can imagine. We also want to thank the sports groups that will be temporarily displaced, for their patience during the construction and reconstruction process. We look forward to the time these little sign holders are all uniformed up and running on what we all accomplished together and play on a field that is truly your Community Field.
