3. Foxborough Regional Charter School Participates in Future Nurses Day 2013

Foxborough Regional Charter School students recently attended Future Nurse Day at Sturdy Memorial hospital in Attleboro.

During the visit students were able to listen to nurse managers from different areas of the hospital as to what their jobs were, why they became interested in nursing and how they manage the job, family and education. They met with the director of the ER, Maternity, Surgery, Cardiology, and the Hospital Vice President.

The Vice President of the hospital explained to them the different jobs that are in the hospital (not all of them are nursing). She talked about the IT that is needed to run a hospital as well as chemists for the labs, environmental people and nutrition and food services and pharmacy and PT and OT. She spoke with the students about what skills and educational requirements nursing students need to work in a hospital, and about looking for the right fit.

The students also took a tour of the hospital and went into many areas visitors are not allowed to see. They went up to see the Helicopter pad on the roof. They visited the nursery viewing area and went under the hospital into the tunnels where the environmental services people work. They were also able to visit the administration areas to see the financial and business office side of things. They were also brought into the lab area where the hospital staff explained how some of the machinery works, how specimens were collected, and how they test the blood and other tissues. They went into the PT and OT areas for both inpatient and outpatient to see the differences.
