5 Things for Sept. 28: Peace Day at King’s Wood, Robert Kraft Nominated for NFL Hall of Fame and More

1. Expect a Rainy Friday in Foxborough

Today’s weather in Foxborough, according to the National Weather Service based in Taunton, calls for rain, mainly after 11 a.m. High near 58. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Friday night: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 a.m., then a chance of rain and thunderstorms between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., then a chance of rain after 2 a.m. Low around 52. East wind 6 to 11 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

2. Peace Day Celebration at King’s Wood Montessori School

As an extension of peace education, King’s Wood Montessori School on Gilmore Street will be commemorating International Peace Day, originated by the U.N. after WWII, with a ceremony on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. on the playground. All parents, family members and friends are invited to join the school at either time as each child will be taking part in the ceremony.

“We have planted a Peace Pole in our garden and during the ceremony we will cut the ribbon to reveal the beautiful words of peace written in four different languages,” said Joan Reale, director of King’s Wood Montessori School. “This pole will be a permanent fixture in our garden and will be a constant reminder to all to strive for peace. Each child will hold a paper containing what their idea of “peace” is, as well as their name, and they will place it in a basket beneath the Peace Pole.”

Rain date is Monday, Oct. 1.

3. Patriots Owner Robert Kraft a Modern-Era Nominee for the NFL Hall of Fame

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is one of 24 contributors, 89 players and 14 coaches to be nominated for the 2013 NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Offensive linemen Larry Allen and Jonathan Ogden, defensive linemen Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan, defensive back John Lynch and kicker Morten Andersen, are among the 13 first-year eligible modern-era candidates nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013.

From that list the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee will choose 25 candidates who will advance as semifinalist nominees. The list of 25 semifinalist nominees will be announced in late November. That semifinalist list will be further reduced by a mail ballot to 15 modern-era finalists and announced in early January. 

The Class of 2013 will be selected from the list of the 15 modern-era finalists plus the two senior nominees (former Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Oilers nose tackle Curley Culp and former Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins linebacker Dave Robinson) who were selected last month by the Hall of Fame’s Senior Selection Committee.

The actual voting for the Class of 2013 will be conducted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee’s annual meeting, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 the day before Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La. The election results will be announced at a live announcement show immediately following the meeting.

While there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the selection process by-laws provide that between four and seven new members will be selected. 

Former Patriots’ quarterback Drew Bledsoe and tight end Ben Coates are also 2013 nominees.

The following Foxborough High School teams will be in action Friday:

• Football opens Hockomock League play when it hosts North Attleboro at 7 p.m.
• Boys’ soccer travels to Canton for a 3:30 p.m. match
• Girls’ soccer hosts Canton at 3:30 p.m.
• Girls’ volleyball hosts Milford at 5 p.m.
• Field hockey hosts Canton at 3:30 p.m.
