Discovering Foxborough: What Movies Have Been Filmed in Town?

Confession time – I’m a fan of movies, especially ones that have local references in storyline, characters or location.

Some favorites that come to mind are The Departed, The Town, Goodwill Hunting, The Fighter, Shutter Island and Fever Pitch.

So when I heard Jason Reitman, the director of films like Juno and Up in the Air, was filming his new movie, Labor Day, throughout the area with locations as close as Mansfield and Medfield, I got excited he may be choosing a location to shoot in Foxborough.

No such luck.

But the possibility got me thinking – what movies have been filmed here in Foxborough?

I did a little research and found the answer – two. According to Massachusetts Film Office, the two movies that have filmed locations in Foxborough are The Game Plan in 2006 and Outside Providence in 1997.

The Game Plan, starring Dwayne “The Rock”  Johnson, shot scenes at Gillette Stadium and Outside Providence, starring Shawn Hatosy, Alec Baldwin and Amy Smart, shot scenes at the old Foxboro Stadium.

And just for good measure, American Idol shot its season nine premiere at Gillette Stadium as well.

During my time in Medfield, I always enjoyed a trip up to the old state hospital property because it reminded me of scenes from “Shutter Island” and I always thought it was pretty cool that Martin Scorsese rolled the cameras there.

So, as I continue to venture around Foxborough and take in different parts of the town for the first time, I began to wonder what locations would appeal to filmmakers.

Massachusetts Film Office suggests downtown Foxborough, Foxboro Common and the Foxboro Ruins as possible locations for filmmakers.

But I want to know what you, the good people of Foxborough, who live, work and breathe this town, think  …

What location(s) in Foxborough would make great movie scenes? Let me know in the comments section of my blog! I will go around town next week photographing your suggestions and compile them into a photo gallery that I will publish in my next blog post.

Until next time.

I can see a scene being filmed on the stairs outside of CBS Scene. Kind of like the scene in the old movie with Bette Davis, called " All About Eve" where she pushes her sister down the stairs. Make it a parody scene where she falls all the way down, bounces up and down, then hops up, wipes her clothes off, then skips away whistling. Either way, I can see those stairs in a movie.
