Tell Us: Should Gyms Allow Cell Phone Use?
One woman's membership was canceled by a local gym for talking on the phone.
Last week, a Westwood woman's Planet Fitness membership was taken away for talking on her cell phone, according to The Boston Herald.
The resident told The Herald that the reason she answered the phone was because it was from her doctor's office. But because she refused to hang up the phone, the manager of the gym canceled her membership.
Some gyms are known for having strict guidelines on cell phone use in order to prevent members from being interrupted by loud conversations.
"It also eliminates concerns about video recording or photographs of people in their exercise outfits," Brian Kablik, Co-owner of the gym, told The Herald.
But what do you think? Should gyms allow cell phone use? Tell us in the comments below.

I know of a person who found it amusing to take photographs of overweight people at a gym, and post them on her Facebook page. Really encouraging to those trying to help themselves. So yes, I support this policy. If you're expecting an urgent call, sta home until it comes.

Really that's insane. As someone that is on-call 24x7x365 I could never go to the gym. What about parents with kids that need to get in touch, etc. If people are concerned about being photographed in their exercise outfits then perhaps they shouldn't be wearing those outfits.

Kids etc need to answer phone and go outside to speak on the phone. Just like in a restaurent or church!
You need a different kind of life....24/7/365!!! Are you Superman or Batman? Are you really that indispensible??!!!

Also, my cell phone is my personal trainer. I use an exercise program on my phone that keeps track of and tells me what I need to do on that day. I couldn't work out without it.

Gary - fine , just don't talk to it or anyone who calls you! Pretty sure this article concerns someone conversing with a caller. How about all the poor people who have to go outside to have a nice smoke?

The Y's and some other gyms have signs posted prohibiting the use of cel phone cameras, especially in lockerrooms. The incident in the article happened at a Planet Fitness that has a written policy prohibiting cel phone conversations and the woman had been warned a number of times previously. I don't think a gym can ban all cel phone use as many people use their smartphones to play music or they use workout apps to assist/track their workouts. Personal trainers now even use smartphone apps instead of carrying around stopwatches. I have no problem if someone has a quick, quiet conversation using a headset but as always, there are self-absorbed individuals who ruin it for everyone else.

'yerk...' people do not have quiet conversations on cell phones. they need to get up or off the treadmill and go outside.

Steve, people have conversations with other people on cardio machines all the time so I see no problem with them having a conversation on a cel phone if on a machine as long as the conversation volume is that of a reasonable conversation between two people. If you use earbuds with a mic that shouldn't be a problem, I see plenty of people having phone conversations on the cardio machines and you can't hear a word they're saying.

In a word, "No." Do we have to be subjected to electronic noise ALL the time. Try going to a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital without a TV going. Yap, yap, yap. Why can we have some peace & quiet?

@ Steve it is spelled "Restaurant". Many people have jobs where they are on call 24/7/365 like Doctors and other professionals as myself. Love your line " How about all the poor people who have to go outside to have a nice smoke?"...really if you need to go smoke while at the gym you shouldn't be at the gym.

I go to the gym and the rule is talk in the lobby with your phone if she couldnt say hold on a min while I go outside then she should be kicked out. To many people are rude with there phones.

I got stopped the other day for texting while driving. I could not believe the gall of the cop when he came back to my car and handed me a ticket. I explained that I conducted my business via text 24/7/365, and I should be exempt from any fine. He didn't seem to interested in tearing up the ticket. I have been unfairly picked on. What you say.

Andrew not a valid argument. Texting while driving is against State law and can kill you and / or someone else. You should get a ticket! Using your cell phone in the gym hurts no one.

"Texting while driving is against state law"
Good point. The public sector sets laws, which if broken result in fines which go back into the coffers of the state to perpetuate the hackorama which is state government.
The private sector has no means of shaking down the citizenry like this, thus sets rules. If rules are broken, you find another gym.

TY Bill. Just wanted Bob to say texting was against the "rules", and you should be punished no matter how important you think you are.
And of coarse no one should condone texting while driving.

Texting while driving is incredibly dangerous and not to mention illegal, totally irrelevant to this feed. Not to mention no one gives a crap how 'important' you are, why should you be exempt from a law that the rest of us are subject to?

There was a time that we did not need our cell phones so much. It is a habit now, and it can be rude at times. Know when to use it. If she broke the rules of the gym then she should take accountability, seems no one wants to do that anymore.

This was this the second time she has done this, as she said in the Fox25 interview, would be great to get the gym's side of the story as well. I find irony in the fact that this woman was on Fox25 a couple weeks earlier in a segment about housewives having afternoon cocktails, could she be looking for an additional 15 minutes of fame?

Jeez, what did we all do before everyone carried cellphones. It is the most annoying thing being anywhere that someone is having a supposedly "personal" conversation that everyone can hear. They talk on the phone in the supermarket, oblivious to people trying to get around them. Phones go off in church and they run outside to answer. Talking on a phone while on a treadmill while other people are trying to exercise is just rude. If someone is waiting for the dr. to call, stay home, take the call and then go to the gym. No excuse.

Marie, let's ban all talking while on cardio machines then. Most of the time the people talking on the phone make less noise than two people talking to each other while on the equipment next to each other. I can't tell you how many conversations I have had to endure between a couple of yentas going on about their precious pumpkins, their hubbys great jobs, etc. Geez, I wonder what people did before the car was invented, horses were perfectly fine.

Why do people feel the need to over communicate. Thats exactly what they are doing on their cell phones texting and calling constantly. Yes cell phones are great to get in touch and a convienence but why all this over communication. There is no social interaction between kids anymore and adults are just as bad. Time and place for everything.
