Letter to the Editor from Robert Kraft: "Casino" Proposal in Foxborough
A letter to the editor from Chairman and CEO of The Kraft Group, Robert K. Kraft.
Letter to the Editor:
I first started doing business in Foxborough more than 25 years ago. Since then, my family and I have tried to build and create businesses that add value and enhance the Town. In addition to our business activities, I have strived to be a charitable member of the community and have built lasting friendships. My family and I have very much enjoyed our relationship with the Town. If nothing else, I hope that my 25-year history here has established a strong track record of doing what we’ve said we would do.
Regarding the proposal for a “casino” in Foxborough, I can understand why some people may be opposed to it. When the concept was first raised, I was opposed, too, but I listened. What I heard is that Wynn Resorts would build a unique destination resort and convention center that would attract visitors from across the globe to spend time and money in this community. The “casino” component would be a small piece of the overall square footage. The resort would not resemble the conceptions people (myself included) have of what constitutes a “casino."
It is personally troubling to me that some are questioning my sincerity regarding whether I believe the proposed resort would be a positive for the Town. I am not motivated to do anything that would devalue the character of the community in which my family has chosen to invest the majority of our assets.
The Town Manager and others have said that Foxborough is facing budgetary issues. It was for that reason that the Town recently approved a new meals tax and split the tax rate to increase the property tax on businesses. Decisions like these make it harder to attract new businesses to the Town, but municipalities all over Massachusetts and the country are making these very difficult decisions due to the need to generate revenue. The Town may decide that this destination resort could be a revenue solution or it may decide that it is not the right solution. I feel strongly, though, that every voter deserves the right to hear the specifics of what the resort would look like and what the economic impact would be before making that decision. That is the democratic process by which all important decisions should be made.
It concerns me that in these uncertain economic times some do not want to allow their fellow citizens the right to hear a proposal. All Foxborough residents should have the opportunity to see a proposal and provide feedback. If it’s not right for Foxborough, they will vote it down, but the proposal should be heard and the democratic process should be followed.
To the communities surrounding Foxborough, I understand that a proposal without details is a matter of concern. Please understand that I believe this is a regional economic development opportunity that will be a positive for all, and that Wynn Resorts will address your concerns moving forward.
Sincerely,
Robert K. Kraft

I am going to recommend to the schools' PTOs that they should be vocally encouraging parents to INSIST that ANY soliciting done by contracted people on behalf of Kraft-Wynn have CORI checks! To send random, low paid men (I've only seen men) come to families' doors , as well as targeting the elderly, is very scary. What an easy way to scope out homes and children.

Most, not some people are opposed to it. The plan is to have a 24 hour open bar in Foxboro, yea! More DUI's, break-ins =more cops, more emergency personnel, more firemen, more jobs! Just what this town and all of the surrounding towns need.

I haven't heard about a 24 hour bar. Is that a FACT?

Amy, I believe that out of the over 10,500 voters in Foxboro there are MORE than a few hundred who want to "hear' the proposal. So it is inaccurate for anyone to use the word "most" when speaking regarding those who have chosen to remain in the background fearing to voice their thoughts. When and if it comes to a ballot question then we will see the "will" of all the people who also are part of the fabric of this town. Thank you Mr Kraft for all that you have done to support the Town, schools, the YMCA and so much more. I too hope we get the chance to listen and then make up our own minds and not be dictated by the "chicken little manta" that we has been played out in the media.

@ Amy, this is another false assumption... not all casinos serve alcohol 24 hours. There are currently liquor license restrictions in MA and Foxboro. I believe Foxboro is currently until 1:00 am. In the negotiations we would have the ability to set the hours we would require them to follow.

Good Morning, I want to thank Mr Kraft for his letter to us the residents of Foxborough. I for one would like to hear and read the proposal from Mr Winn. I beleive in Mr Kraft and after we read it all citizens of Foxborough will be able to say " yes or no ".
John

@Amy: "most" people I know are not opposed to a casino at this point in time. They may or may not be in the future, but for right now most are willing to listen. I have been to a few high class resort casino's in my day (including The Wynn) and the guests look like the people who dine at Davio's, Luciano's and L'Espalier.
A casino attracts the clientele it wants to attract by regulating the cost of its gambing tables and the prices on its menus. Steve Wynn isn't interested in the guy who used to bet two dollars on greyhounds at Raynham and that guy won't be able to afford to go to a Steve Wynn casino.
The most troubling aspect of this situation is the talk of letting a few decide what is best for me and the rest of the citizens of this town. What country do we live in where a few individuals feel they can decide what is or isn't appropriate for Foxboro? Amy, what if a select few decided they are going to build a ridiculously large and expensive new town hall and you are going to pay much more in taxes and you have no right to vote on the scope of the project. Americans have fought and died to give the rest of us the right to vote... what is being talked about now isn't democracy.
The point of all this is to be educated, learn what a first class resort will REALLY do to the area, and then make an informed decision.
Steve

Careful John, that idea of building the new town hall without a vote from the public has already been been brought forward by Lorraine Brue and Mr. Paicos. They claim that "they" can fund the new town hall "within the budget"!!!! We have at least two town meetings every year. No important or decisions that would last for decades should be made by only a few indivduals.
Thank you Mr. Kraft for your simple words. I hope to have a chance to hear the proposal before I am forced to vote on the issue. Unfortunately there are many closed minded individuals that are "running the show" and I fear I may not get this chance.

I'm starting to think the same thing John in regards to the high class people Wynn would target (like Davio's, Luciano's and L'Espalier). I'm neither pro nor against the resort until I hear more details, but I'm under the impression everything Wynn is involved in is 5 stars price range. I'm going to Vegas next month and noticed that Wynn came up as the most expensive resort in my hotel package hunt. I agree, I don't think Wynn is after some of the rift-raft (no offense...not all are) that hangs out at the dog track or sits there with buckets of nickels playing 5 cent slots. I like the fact that Mr. Kraft openly admitted he too was against a "casino" when he first heard the idea. If they have a solid plan for traffic and it's truly 5 stars then I might be sold that that my house value wouldn't take much of a hit...if any. I think the people of Walpole immediately close to the resort should be most concerned....but if they built say a golf course that abutted those properties it might not be such a bad thing, especially if they got free memberships to play. Wait to hear the proposal.
John

JayB, the FACT is that home values near first class casino's rise higher and faster than home values in other parts of the states they're in. Sorry but that is a FACT!

How do you know that that there are "more than a few hundred" people interested in a casino proposal? Are these out of towners? Union guys? People with no children to raise? Have you gone door to door or made phone calls around town? We all know what a casino is, dress it up, downplay it all you want. Ask Foxboro police about the increase in DUI's since Patriot Place opened, facts are facts. Let's us also not forget about people who have not slept at all who sit behind the wheel of a car (an issue that has been overlooked). We all heard what the former mayor of Ledyard, CT said about what happened to the town, I suggest you read it. As the old saying goes, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. Can't wait to hear all the well thought out counterpoints.
John
8:09 pm on Tuesday, December 27, 2011
Amy, Foxwoods is on an Indian reservation and doesn't pay money to Ledyard. The comparison is apples to oranges. Have you been to the MGM in CT or The Wynn or The Bellagio? Have you been to South Lake Tahoe? Beautiful resort destinations. We're talking about ONE five star resort/casino across the street from a 70000 seat football and concert stadium. Foxboro isn't going to change...
Amy

John, I have been to Vegas a few times, lots of fun. Been outside the strip too, dangerous, littered and seedy. Saw the natural beauty as well, Red Rock Canyon. I stayed at MGM, ate at the Bellagio, seen it all. Still don't want it anywhere near my home. Foxboro isn't going to change, ha! Very funny. This isn't just about Foxboro, it's about all the surrounding towns, towns that I was considering moving to. Towns that won't receive the "benefits" (which we don't need btw) Vegas was built because of the casinos, New England has been here for hundreds of years. Hey, it's just ONE steaming pile of S*#T, right? Wrap it up Wynn employees, this will end soon, and I am confident there will be no casino here.
John

John, it's good to have a sense of humor. I am only responding so others can see how ridiculous you sound. You have one point, Foxwoods is in a place which is not nearly as populated as this area is, so I guess you can't compare. This proposed casino would be in the center of a highly populated area. Let's see, ugh, "resort destinations" in Vegas are surrounded by crime, filth, unsavory characters, etc. What, should people who live in those neighborhoods buy a condo on the strip? I guess I should sell my house and live on the "strip" which would be Route 1, LOL. Did you watch the meeting last night? Time to pack up your stuff, it has been fun.

Perhaps the anti-casino crowd and others want to read the current HuffingtonPost article entitled "Online Gambling Gets Boost from Obama Administration" -article by Jim Wolf and Nicola Leske from December 25, 2011. Perhaps the Massachusetts Attorney General's office would like to review the current law. Article found at: 1) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/25/online-gambling-obama-administration_n_1169543.html. Regarding The Isle of Man/tax haven.
Also, read the article from December 22, 2011 from the Las Vegas Examiner at Examiner.com; 1) http://www.examiner.com/las-vegas-in-national/steve-wynn-considering-casino-options-miami-and-foxborough. Bob Kraft - in a local Boston area newspaper, you were quoted as wanting a "Life Sciences Center" across from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. So you are what, settling for 2nd-Place?
Jacob

A life sciences building will not bring even a tenth of the revenue a Convention center/resort/casino would. I think they saw an oppurtunity to bring in the most revenue for Foxborough with this Wynn deal. Bob Kraft is a philanthropist. He doesn't need more money, he says this. He just wants to give the community and the State a chance to act on something that could generate revenue and put people back to work. Any businessman is going to weigh the advantages of a project before throwing his name behind it. I think he did that fairly and I am sure he is just as anxious to see a proposal as we are. Im interested and I hope other people will atleast wait because I have a feeling there are a lot of people in the middle.

Mr. Kraft. As you said you made an investment of your assets in our community but we made an investment with our lives. We already voted NO on gambling in this community. We know what it is and what comes with it. It really does not make a difference the casino will be a small piece of the overall square footage, as it usually is in other casinos/resorts as well, as contrary to retail or spas, or convention centers, game tables or slots machines do not require that much space to deliver most of casino’s revenue. So comparing it like that is misleading and not sincere on your part. I understand you want to see the casino resort to attract visitors from across the globe to invest into our community, as this will create additional economic stimulus to your local investments as well, but will also bring additional traffic, DUI and crime, to name only few to our home town, a place where we live and raise our children. If you still believe the opportunity will be positive "for all" as you just wrote, then you really must not heard or listen to many of us.
John

Natalia, who voted? There's a horse track a mile from Foxboro... what damage has it done to Foxboro? Wynn's proposal will be akin to a FOUR SEASONS hotel with restaurants and shops and a casino. I high end casino.

An interesting "Sharon/Patch.com" article that Foxboro residents might want to read and keep in mind, is the current "Opinion" piece by Paul Izzo, article entitled: "Two Big Court Cases Could Affect Presidential Election" - 1) U.S. Supreme Court to decide challenges to health care bill, and 2) Arizona Immigration bill, in 2012.
With those thoughts in mind, then the "Online Gambling Gets Boost from Obama Administration" article, as referred to above...article by: Jim Wolf and Nicola Leske from December 25, 2011 in the HuffingtonPost, should be studied carefully, and whether or not it is even Constititional, as proposed. In which case, it would be helpful to hear from other Attorney General's, all across America.

What is really off-putting to me about Bob Kraft's letter is its paternalistic tone. It's a preachy, talk-down to the citizens of Foxborough. The board of selectmen should kill the casino tonight and start the New Year right.

We all expect that before a vote is brought forward by the BoS, all selectmen would contact their constituency to evaluate the sentiment of most town’s people. If they sense high level of conflict, we would expect that a strong discussion would ensue to reach the best decision for the town.
THIS IS THE SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY AND THE INDIVIDUAL RIGHT, OF ALL, TO BE HEARD.
So on September 6th, this board had to vote on a very important issue:
Does Foxboro want to be Gambling town?
The vote was unanimous and the future and character of our town was secured.
Any reasonable person would assume that the process of popular consultation was followed by the board, that all views were considered and respected. After all, we have three small business owners, one high level executive working for a fortune 500 hundred company and one trusted employee of a small business. This board is representing 100% of who we are in Foxboro.

Two days later we heard, through news reported in the Foxboro reporter, that Mr. Harrington had reversed his position and was doing it because he felt that we needed a more open discussion and bringing this item to the public vote, so that all views were heard.
The views of all Foxboro residents.
I for one can understand that a reasonable person can change his or her mind, due to new information or new pressure from a constituent or constituents, that attitude shows flexibility and a sense of fair play.
The logical step would have been to have an open discussion and suggest that a vote be prepared to poll the town about the citizen’s view on the mater.
Two groups that would have been formed, pro casino and contrary to casino, each group organized by selectmen with a different view to present their arguments to all of us during an open meeting.
This groups could have been required to present fact based statistical information, based on past experiences on similar towns, showing the before and after conditions and changes that occurred in those towns.
This information exists and is readily available to substantiate both pro and cons of opening casinos in Foxboro.

Please read top two postings first, size issues, so I divided it into three segments.
Our BoS lead by Mr. Harrington, who met with Mr. Kraft and Mr. Wynn, did not propose that, he proposed to allow the casino proponents to present their plan, over riding the right of the people to decide if we wanted gambling in our town, any gambling, regardless of the percentage of the area dedicated to casino activities.
As we all know, 10% of 10,000 square feet is smaller than 10% of 1 million square feet. If 10% of 10,000 sq feet is too much for us, what makes any one think that we could be interested to listen to a plan with a larger area dedicated to gambling?

I have no issue with your comment as I see that you say “it could generate revenue ....” as a qualifier to the benefits that might come to the town.
I experienced the Foxwoods effects as I used to live in Niantic, 15 miles from the area of the casino, with many friends who have shared their disappointment.
Allowing a small gambling operation is only the beginning, what comes next will be decay of our town and gains for the investors, be it land owners and/or casino operators.
As for Mr. Kraft, I hear he is wonderful man and a very skilled business man, I may trust one but not necessarily the other.

Hector I appreciate your post, but the Foxwoods comparison is not one to be had. The sovereign nation makes its own rules. The taxpayers of Ledyard do not have the power to set zoning restrictions or reap the benefits of revenue. Foxboro will have that advantage.

a vote from you for this is essentially an agreement to the "contract" of a casino. Do you think that kraft would sign a contract with out specific details? Then why would you? You're all smarter than that, I hope.
Your town already has a cash cow (the stadium) as compared to most towns. Will taxes now be gone for all residents? No.
That stadium just creates a mess every weekend there is a game. The beer cans are taken out in dump trucks. Casinos are 24hr /7 all in.
Don't get me wrong i love going to a casino and raising hell, and every time I do I"m certainly glad I don't live near one.

Mr Kraft is not our friend. He is the one who tried to blackmail the state of Massachusetts into paying for his stadium or else he would move to Connecticut. He is the one who locked out players like Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker because he feels he should keep all the profits for himself. I consider Mr Kraft a bad man. He is no different than a thief who breaks into your house in the middle of the night. This man is trying to take away our small town for his profit. It’s absurd to say this town will remain a small town with a 30 story casino (look at the planning board application) and 55,000 visitors a day. That is not a small town. I don’t want Foxboro to become a Mecca for Gamblers just so Kraft can make more money.
We need to protect our house from this bad man. Do you really want your kids waiting for the bus as drunk drivers swerve down the streets? Do you really want your kids playing out in their back yard as very angry people who just lost money gambling look overhead from their hotel windows? I really don’t need a Sales Pitch from a thief on why robbing my house and hurting my kids will be good for me in the long run.

What would we vote on? That 10,000 jobs sound nice? Then when these jobs don’t materialize Kraft will say “Ooops” And the amount of money keeps changing. You don’t think they will get their high price lawyers to make sure they pay as little in taxes as they possible can? As far as I know, Kraft got all those liquor licenses on Route One and didn’t give Foxboro anything in return. Now DUI is up and the police spend all their time dealing with drunk drivers. Doesn’t Ticketmaster make more money off a concert at Gillette than the town of Foxboro does?

Michael, I have no problem at all with it being put to a vote. First by the Board of Selectmen and if they vote in favor, a vote to the whole town. The Selectmen are fully within their rights to vote not to have a town referendum though, that's how our Government works (although truth be told, I favor the binding vote on the Zoning change right away). What I do object to is subjecting everyone to Wynn's dog & pony show as though it's a necessity in order to render an opinion or as though it's something the town would be able to hold him to once he gets his approval. Let the town vote if that what the Selectmen decide but spare us the slick marketing presentation unless you're going to allow equal time on a spearate date for a presentation by the anti-casino group (although that wouldn't really be fair because you'd be pitting townspeople against a mutli-million Dollar mareting, PR & lobbyist operation).

Johns funny, huh Dave? Such a snob. Only the rich, high class degenerates will come to our area to gamble. Ooh, maybe some celebrities will come here! Newsflash: There are some people who actually steal to get enough money to gamble. You have heard of drug addicts stealing from their own families to buy, right?

I believe that we should have more faith in the voters in that they can take a critical look at a proposal and make an informed decision. I also believe we are smart enough to see through the chaff of the sales pitch side, PR campaign and the rest of it. I'll leaning toward voting against it but I want to make an informed decision. If someone proposes to invest a billion dollars in our community, i am interested in checking it out further. It feels like some, granted with all good intentions, are trying to protect us from ourselves. I posted under Deborah's comment but it was not directed at you personally.

Scott, I'm not sure if you're replying to me however I can assure you that I'm not one of those trying to protect us from ourselves. I simply don't see the point in a dog & pony show. It's going to be a protracted, costly, divisive exercise and in the end it will have little bearing on what will actually happens if the town grants approval.

Michael, as I replied to Steve in an another post, I think the mistake here is assuming that the anti casino sentiment is on moral grounds. I don't think many of the anti crowd care one way or another if a person wants to gamble, they just don't want it in their town because of the ample precedent of the negative impact it has on a community. That's more of a business/social decision than a moral one. I have a woman that works for me that goes to Foxwoods on a semi-regular basis. She enjoys going but based on her experience it's nothing she wants in the neighboring town.

Michael:
I do not take their comments seriously.
Regarding the five star resort, that part is not the problem, the problem is the casino part of their business, which can be transfered to anyone without the town having the option to stop it.
Gambling is gambling, regardless of Wynn's resort or Patriots place.
Do you think that conventions will be made here because of the casino?
Do you think that the casino will be included because of the high rollers?
Michael Chang
1:56 pm on Thursday, December 29, 2011
The casino part of the resort is what generates the revenue. Gambling is here and here to stay. The U.S. government is in discussions for the ability to regulate online gambling on a state by state basis. Gambling is in everyone's backyard. If we dont take advantage of the benefits that Wynn has to offer, someone else probably very near Foxboro will.

Michael, I think you are missing the irony. You see, a casino hosts many more vices, one being prostitution. In many nice hotels, Boston included, working girls sit at the bars, make deals with the bartenders, even give cuts to the concierge. (I know, I worked in a Boston hotel) We all know the variety of conventions they have in Las Vegas. There's the porn expos, the AVN Awards. There is no advantage in having a casino in your neighborhood, just a bad reputation, more crime, traffic, car accidents and a strain on the towns resources. Foxboro's schools are doing quite nicely, thank you. If a casino comes here, well, we all know what will happen to the schools. Do I really need to spell it out? Maybe another Massachusetts city can host a casino and take the "advantages" a casino has to offer. Fall River, New Bedford, or how about Lynn? It would actually give me a reason to go to any of those places, LOL.
Deborah A Stewart
5:19 pm on Thursday, December 29, 2011
Amy, how old are you? Do you actually believe there is no prostitution in Foxboro NOW? Get a grip! Every local watering hole has "ladies of the night" and it is not ALL Rte 1 watering holes. On any given night you can see a few sitting at the local bar at any eating establishment along 140. So my dear....it is here and it is not going anywhere and a resort/casino is NOT going to bring anything we don't already have in town, sex, drugs and rock in roll! I hope all the anti-casino people are paying , as much attention to the sexual exploits and drug use that is going on in the middle school and high school. You want to worry about the effects of a casino on your children...maybe these parents should be paying more attention to who, what and where their kids are at all times. Foxboro, and it kills me to say this as a grandparent is NOT the "pristine" community that we all try to believe it is. We do not live in a Disney movie....and if you think we do....you are in lala land.
Amy

Typical response from an angry old lady. I guess you're mad that you will have to continue being bused into Foxwoods with your Mahjong pals. No we don't live in a Disney movie, but it's something to aspire to. Of course there is prostitution here. According to a local cop, it's primarily in the seedy hotels on Route 1 (you see, that is where they rent the rooms by the hour). You are right, a casino won't bring in anything that we don't already have, it will just bring in more of it. Oh, but with a casino, there will be high class call girls for the high rollers, and there will be much nicer rooms right there on premise! I'm not worried about the ill affects a casino might have on my children, I'm a good parent, I am worried about them getting broadsided by a drunk driver or a driver who has been up all night gambling. It happened to me fairly recently, with my child in the car. Seat belts saved our lives. It's good to know that you hang out at those watering holes on 140. Do you also point out women who breastfeed in public? I will look out for you at the Ancient Mariner, LOL.

Amy, Amy, Amy! First let me say I am very sorry that you were recently in a car accident with your child. No one, especially me as a "young" grandmother wants to hear that. I sincerely hope both you and your child were not hurt.
That being said you have given me a huge belly laugh at 4am! Thanks for starting my day off with laughter. Just to make it clear....I don't "hang out" at those watering holes.....but I do go out to eat and you can pretty much tell who are ladies on a night out and who are ladies of the night. That was my only point.
I am neither angry nor stupid just someone who disagrees with some of your points. So if you prefer to call me an "angry old lady" because we disagree on some issues so be it. Just remember one day you too will be "old" but it appears and I could be wrong but it seems like you have the angry part already. Wishing you a happy and safe New Year. Buck Farack

Janet, kids are as much a part of the argument as anything else. The impact the additional children of the low wage workers will have on the school district, the impact the additional revenue to the town & schools, the impact of the vices & additional crime will have on the local young people, jobs for youth, ect. Parents of children are fully within their rights to have a strong opinion on the subject, either way. There's also the issue of people that bing their kids to the casinos & put them in playcare, wheel them around in their strollers while they gamble or leave them in the cars in the parking lot (a reasonably common occurrence at the CT casinos). Kids are a big part of the argument for many people.

Bullying is done by those on power against those that have no options.
Bullying is what the Chairman of the Foxboro BoS did throughout this discussion.
The Chairman should have named a Subcommittee to investigate the pros and cons of the casino, based on historic facts and then report their finds to the town.
Mr. Harrington was pushing on us the idea that we had to listen to an INFOMERCIAL, so that we could make an INFOMERCIALLED decision.
As a marketing entity the Wynn organization would present a beautiful building with and ice cube size gambling section, but the ice cube would be the tip of the iceberg, which we would only see later on.
I agree, stop the bullying,

Why don't you discuss my suggestion that he should have form a Subcommittee to explore the good and the bad, by people like Mr. Lachapelle and others he has trusted before?
Why his instance in allowing the Wynn people to present their plan, before the town has approved the concept of GAMBLING?

You need more facts than what I have listed in the previous post?
My bias, as you call it, is that I have experienced his style of BULLYING, like we have just experienced in our last meeting.
Even after Mark Sullivan voted against Mr. Harrington's agenda, we all heard time and time again that we should bring the INFOMERCIAL into town, so that we could make an INFOMERCIALLED DECISION?
At least I was close to your association with Linda, so we can assume that your bias will be for the casino, this anything that brings us close to it would be of your liking.

SECOND PART OF RESPONSE
Mr. Harrington had many options to correct the record and never did.
We witnessed his attack on Paul Feeney during the meetings, through letters to the editor and never clarifying his statements.
You may remember his attaks on Mr. Gala who is no longer working in the town, you may recall his arguments with Mr. Derenzis, about a $12.50 for a salad that he charged the town, now we are evaluating his replacement.
I drunk the Kool-Aid he serves, but when I paid attention to the ingredients I distanced myself and demanded accountability.
In this case I am asking the questions again:
Why did he forgo the option of a subcommittee?
Why did he insist that we should hear the Wynn proposal, before the town agreed to accept Casino gambling?
Why did he remained obsessed in continuing the discussion after the vote by stating that the vote deprived some citizens of the right to know more?
Why not establish the Subcommittee now and present facts and then we can vote about gambling?
BTW, this positing is not for you, as you already know the facts I am discussing, this post is for the benefit of those participants who do not know the real Mr. Harrington.

Michael,
Why must everyone focus on alcohol and car accidents. As I stated twice before, people who are up all night gambling, with absolutely no sleep, and then leave angry that they have lost all their money get behind the wheel of a car is horrifying. What other place is open all night long other than a hospital? I was also broadsided in the middle of the day. So, someone could spend all morning from 8:00am until 12:00pm drinking and then get behind the wheel. Unless you are an alcoholic, one just does not sit in an establishment on a Tuesday at 10:00AM for hours drinking. But if you are gambling, you have an excuse, especially if free drinks are provided.

It would be interesting to hear from all the pro-casinos supporters, and find out where all of you work, and how you can afford to gamble. For instance, when the current average of extended nursing home care for a loved one is approximately $12,000 per month x 12 months = $144,000 per year; or put another way.....$144,000 x 2 =$288,000.00/Amount Earned Before Tax(es).
Steve Wynn offered Foxboro residents "free childcare" - I noticed that nothing was mentioned about "free Elder Care." Was Steve Wynn and Bob Kraft willing to pick up that expensive tab too? I doubt it. But then again, by the time the elder parent/grandparent/grandfather/grandmother requires "Elder Care and/or Nursing Home Care" - it is beyond their gambling years. And yet, the financial burden oftentimes, not always....but oftentimes, falls on the younger generation/children, to fund their nursing home care/elder care.
So, back to my question above.....where do all the pro-casino people work? And how can you afford to gamble? Or are you simply hoping to pass-off your financial obligations, to the rest of us......to somehow pay for your own elder-care obligations?
I am just plain curious. You must have incredibly high income levels, to afford all of that. And great financials advisors too! Enlighten the Patch readership, so we may learn from you, and get ourselves educated on how to do it.

Janet, please, go back to Brighton. There are plenty of houses that have the opportunity for multiple roommates to share the rent.. Then you can hope they build a casino there and you will be able to get to work using public transportation because you won't be able to afford a car. Or maybe you can take a "horse buggy" They actually have them in Boston! Ok, they are for tourists, but you have an idea, let's go with it. Before I had kids, I got by on a low wage job; I did not have a car and had roommates, and I lived near Brighton. Then I became an adult. I will never "keep the kids out of the casino subject" Children are our future. Our families are why we work, to support them. A casino will guarantee those low wage jobs, but those people won't be able to live in this area, or even be able to afford a car. Will there be a public bus route going directly to the casino? A shuttle? The commuter rail? Maybe they can use the horses at Plainridge to transport people. You are right, a casino does affect everyone. That is why a casino is bad all around. Actually how many good jobs would there be at a casino, not including the temporary construction jobs, etc.. Hmm....wait staff, dealers, maids and cooks, garage attendants, cashiers, yippee! If you get a job there, you won't have to bag your lunch because the cheap buffet will be available. Although, a 5 Star Resort won't have a cheap buffet, will it?.

Thanks for your reply Janet Kennedy, appreciate it. Interesting you mention churches in your reply, as they too are also going to be impacted financially by these proposed casinos, especially those churches that have had Bingo.
And when it comes to coupons, yes.....I agree with you there too and I use coupons often. I have even suggested a coupon-program at two libraries.....Mansfield Public Library and The Ames Free Library in Easton. Trial basis, and occasionally they are placed on the bulletin boards....but only with the libraries permission, ahead of time. As a free service to library patrons, in a difficult economy.
It doesn't sound Janet Kennedy like you'll be spending big $$$ at a casino, regardless of location.
Having just read the Milford/Patch/Massachusetts post - article referred to above-1) http://milford-ma.patch.com/articles/milford-schools-could-get-casino-money-in-senate-bill........it appears the casino crowd/pro-casino supporters are now directly linking casino dollars/casino money, to the school systems in Milford, Massachusetts. In which case, that is a direct link to people's children....and educational funding from casinos. That is unfortunate.
I prefer Massachusetts without casinos. A point I have made clear many times before.
It makes me wonder what the engineers are engineering, at our colleges/universities. WPI, MIT, Brown University, OSU.edu -etc.

I visited one. Seriously, a casino will be built somewhere. The town that accepts will have higher percentages of the generalizations of the people I mention above. So that town will likely be a less desirable place to live than Foxboro anyway. This will create some jobs, but it and it’s problems do not have to be in our backyard to create them or to have access to them. If you desire to be a blackjack dealer you could get a job there at Suffolk downs. This is a bad deal to have it close by. So is the money received suddenly going to make the Foxboro streets lined with gold? No. More long term problems than the money can solve. Do more cops equal less crime? No, not really just more cops to catch the bad guys after they’ve committed the crime. That doesn’t really help the person that may have just been a victim of that crime.

Janet, I have nothing but respect for the elderly. I have volunteered with the elderly in the past, and hope to do more in the future, when I can find the time. I wonder how old you are? If you are from the generation in the 1950's and 60's that raised a family when a woman could afford to stay home with the kids, have one car, own a home, go on a vacation once or twice a year and have money saved for your 2.5 kids college, you are lucky. College was alot more affordable back then. It's not like that anymore, unfortunately. My grandfather had no college education and worked at Benny's as a salesman. He lived a nice life, with all the aforementioned perks. Honestly, what person can work at Sears and do that now? I understand that there are people that cannot get a job that is white collar. But to encourage job growth that is nothing but low wage, low skilled is not positive, and not good for the long term.

"This is dead Kraft, move on this isn't a legacy project you'd want now. The project is polluted if you try to push beyond the vote of the selectmen. Your legacty will be one of trying to ram a casino down the throats of foxboro. Good or bad, they're officials made the decision so move on" ---
I'm sure he'll heed your advice Jay.

What about the Biotech Park Kraft first proposed? There are many jobs for the non college educated person in that industry. For example, a casino will have Locksmiths and Slot Technicians. Biotech companies have positions in Facilities and Maintenance (maintaining specialized manufacturing and testing equipment) A casino will have Janitorial Staff, so will Biotech companies. A casino will have cooks and sous chefs, Biotech companies will have cafeterias and roach coaches. Local businesses will benefit from the employees working at the Biotech Park. That includes restaurants, supermarkets, shops, hotels, gas stations, etc.... A casino has Shipping and Receiving, a Biotech Park will have Shipping and Receiving. Delivering goods to the Biotech companies will create jobs for truckers just as there would be jobs for truckers to deliver to a casino. A casino will have Surveillance Officers, Biotech companies will have Security Guards. A casino will have Cage Cashiers, Biotech companies will have Administrative Positions.

As for white collar jobs: A casino will have Accountants, Biotech companies will have alot more Accountants than a casino. A casino will have Gaming Manager and Gaming Supervisor jobs, Biotech companies will have all kinds of Supervisor and Management jobs that pay alot more than what a casino would pay. A Wynn "5 Star Resort " casino will have sales consultants selling Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Biotech companies will have Pharmaceutical sales jobs that will pay alot more money. In closing, both will have more jobs than the Foxboro and surrounding towns economy needs and the average pay will be higher for the Biotech jobs.

Kraft/Wynn could easily fund a new small private college, on the land across the street from Gillette Stadium. Or an outcrop of an existing college that wants to expand. Creating full time jobs with a benefit package, health insurance, 403B, tuition remission and tuition reimbursement, gym, pool, basketball court(s), football etc. These jobs would therefore not be outsourced overseas, but instead would remain full time permanent jobs and some part time jobs, local to Foxboro. Shortened commute for those that would work at the small private college.
The Foxboro Company/Invensys, other local companies with an interest level....engineers who could work there, train, take classes....and perhaps create the option of a co-op school, similar to Northeastern University's co-op program. Internships for college students.
Life is full of choices Bob Kraft.
Dave
3:41 pm on Sunday, January 1, 2012
There are so many better choices for the land across from the stadium, if Kraft must do something with it (seeing as how Patriot place is just thriving -rolls eyes.....But seriously a Biotech park would be infinitely more desirable and would actually raise property values. The white trash casino being proposed will decimate property values, and those in Foxboro would save $200 a year on property taxes while watching their houses lose 50-100k in market value....All so two billionaires can line their pockets. Its amazing how deferential some are to Kraft. The guy has been good to Foxboro but lets not go overboard, this isn't about anything but more money and it will ruin a lot of lives if it goes through. Kraft needs to drop this like he promised.

Amy I am not that old. I think you really need to get a grip on life. A lot of people cann't find good jobs any more. Also The Biotech companies have laid off a lot of people. Dave housing market has tanked how many have lost a home in foxboro recently
Dave
4:53 pm on Sunday, January 1, 2012
Janet your house will tank that much more. 24x7 Crime, prostitution, dui accidents, traffic, low income non English speaking clientele and employees do not raise property values, they decimate them. It really isn't all that complicated. Foxboro was doing just fine before this proposal, and it will be just fine when Wynn moves on to prey on some other area with his money grab...
Amy

Janet, I need to "get a grip on life" Really? If you're "not that old", then why did you throw out the old card, and I quote you, 'I'm older" Do you know much about the Biotech Industry? Because I do. While the economy has hit alot of industries hard, Biotech was not hit as hard. Yes, the housing market has tanked, but having a casino in town isn't going to help raise the value of our homes, for goodness sake. Please, post something thought provoking, insightful and spelled correctly.

Janet, I am not bullying, I am getting frustrated. I never called you old. You implied that you were, read your own posts. You don't read the posts all that thoroughly, do you? Put your reading glasses on. You read The Globe and the Times, we are all impressed. So then why do you need spell check? Biotech was hit as well as many other industries, including the casinos, hello. You have a degree in business management but work as a cashier? Blame the economy, yea, right. Wow. Another thoughtful and educated post.

Look like this thread is done. We had some interesting dialogue and accomplished alot over the past month. It was nice to see that people made their own yard signs after theirs have been stolen. I sure most of us are happy that round one (out of many matches) has been won with this disastrous casino thing. Until the next debate.......Hopefully it won't have plants and people having a bit of fun messing with others. But, that is just a New years wish. Hope 2012 is a great year for everyone!

Janet, she's the Joe McCarthy of the Patch who has taken it upon herself to inform us simple villagers who the pro casino plants are. In the beginning her posts were exclusively claims about people being plants and admonishing us not to reply to them or we would be helping their cause. There was a brief period where she actually posted some anti-casino arguments but now she's back to the ad hominem attacks & outing the alleged plants. Click on her name & follow her posts, you'll see.

As you plan not only Foxboro's future, but the future of other people elsewhere around the country, understanding the following concept is key. Take the time to read, research. A link to get you started is found here: "Generation X" - 1)http://legalcareers.about.com/od/particetips/a/GenerationX.htm.
"The Generation (X) marks the period of birth decline after the baby boom and is significantly smaller than previous and succeeding generations."
Understanding that concept, is key. Especially when it comes to the labor market. Read further articles on the topic.

If the above link does not come up, try search words: "Generation After Baby Boomers Birth Statistics Job Market" - and the above article by Sally Kane from About.com/legalcareers should pop up from the search engines. In part it states: "Generation X encompasses the 44 to 50 million Americans born between 1965 and 1980. This generation marks the period of birth decline after the baby boom and is significantly smaller than previous and succeeding generations. To reach Sally Kane by email, the article lists her c/o legalcareers.guide@about.com.

"Tivmomof2" - A 2-page formal, written complaint has been filed by me against you, and it remains on file at both police departments, Easton and Tiverton, Rhode Island police departments. You are crazy. The school department in Easton also has a copy of that 2-page written complaint that I filed against you, due to the excessive threats you made against both me, my son, and your criminal stalking behavior that you have engaged in involving my family, including my husband. I suggest you stop. Associate Justice/Judge Melanie Wilk Thunberg in Newport County, Rhode Island also has a copy of my 2-page written complaint that I filed against you, and the Attorney General's Office in Massachusetts, Martha Coakley...will be receiving a copy as well. You are a criminal stalker. And appropriate steps are being taken to find you, and get you the professional help that you need. It is unwise to be threatening people, the way you did, especially me and my son. Where do you work? Real estate in Tiverton, Rhode Island? Oh really? Does your employer know what you are up to? They will. Get yourself professional help.
I noticed you were kicked off the Easton Patch as well.
