Large Crowd Expect to Cast Votes For Foxborough Selectman: (Take Our Poll)

The voters of Foxborough will have their pick of four candidates to fill two seats on the board of selectmen Monday.

In case the lawn signs across town don’t give it away, it's election time.

When voters go to the polls for local elections on Monday, there will be four candidates vying for the two three-year term selectmen spots available.

After seeing a voter turnout of 24.7-percent in 2009 and then 27.3 in 2010, the 2011 elections saw a drastic drop with only 17-percent of register voters in towns heading to the polls.

With the major issue of a casino on Route 1 taking the town by storm, turnout is expected to see a significant increase when Foxborough goes to vote May 7 at the Ahern School from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Voter interest has been high this election season. I am anticipating a turnout in excess of 50-percent,” said Foxborough Town Clerk Bob Cutler.

The high interest is something that current board of selectmen chairman Larry Harrington noted during his reelection campaign.

“Never had so many people calling, asking for lawn signs and asking to help,” Harrington said. “This election should be a huge turnout.”

Harrington along with selectman candidate and current school committee member Martha Slattery support hearing a proposal over the potential casino and destination resort.

His support has made him a target for anti-casino voters looking to add another anti-casino vote to the board of selectmen. Last December, the board voted 3-2 to send a letter to Governor Deval Patrick, the Kraft Organization, the Wynn Group, and the State Gaming Commission saying that they will not negotiate a deal to place a casino across the street from Gillette Stadium.

Slattery has expressed caution concerning a casino, saying that she would rather see the proposal before deciding if she is for or against having the casino.

“Being for or against any issue before its presented to me is political suicide,” Slattery said at the Foxboro Jaycees’ Candidates Night on April 27.

Slattery, who currently sits on the school committee, is running for selectman for the second time after a failed attempt in 2009.

“Martha and I trust the 11,000 voters to make the decision after they carefully weigh the negatives and positives of the proposal,” said Harrington.

Voting in favor of the letter was Harrington’s fellow board member Lorraine Brue. The incumbent has shown optimism that she will be reelected on Monday.

“I believe my campaign has gone well and hope for a positive outcome on Monday,” said Brue.

Like the other candidates, Brue has received an influx of support in what has been a more competitive election season that usual.

“I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support and good wishes I am receiving from residents who stop to talk with me about Monday's election,” Brue said.  “I am also appreciative of all of the support provided by members of my campaign team. They have been instrumental in helping me stay strong as a candidate.”

While some are focusing specifically on the casino issue, Ginny Copolla feels that she has more to off than just an opinion on the single issue.

“I feel that my campaign is going very well because I reflect the opinions of the many people in Foxborough who do not want a casino sited in town,” Copolla said. “However, these same people feel that I will be able to tackle the other issues facing this town so that I am not viewed as an one issue candidate.”

Copploa, who is a former state representative and a former member of a racetrack research group, believes that voters while keeping the casino issue in mind are looking beyond that to choose the best representives for their town.

“While it was not my intention to make Monday's election a referendum on the casino issue, apparently it is more and more looking that way.  I prefer to think that the election is about the opportunity for the people of Foxborough to choose their representatives on the board of selectmen that reflect their own views,” Coppola said.

Whoever prepared this poll shows very little understanding of how voting works. No voter must vote for 2 people. The ballot instructions are to vote for no more than 2 people.Voting for only one person is the same as giving that person 2 votes. Savvy people who prefer one candidate over all others often do that. It's called "bullet" voting. A proper poll would have listed candidates individually, not in pairs.

Good point Dennis. I agree. The poll should be re-submitted with the candidates listed individually to make it mean anything.

Let's not forget Ms. Slattery's family work at Gillette and for other Kraft initiatives. If you and family members work for a man who signs your paycheck, how independent can you be?

All these articles make it seem like the casino is the only objective in town. If you're for it, vote Harrington/Slattery. Against, vote Brue/Coppola. I just moved to town. I am sure there are other issues that these candidates stand for that would help make my decision, but all that is being told is how they stand on the casino issue.

This recent election season can not but bring into my mind its similarities to “Classic Novel” most probably read in school “Animal Farm” by George Orwell.

A certain faction in our town seems to take their modus operandi from the rebellious animals. In a way trying to use democracy to subvert democracy!

In my mind these quotes reflect their mind set:

• "No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?"
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 5

• "they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces…”
-George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 7

• "ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS"
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 10

I hope that a majority of us consider all the consequences and make our voice heard in the Monday May 7 town election!

If you look at Larry Harrington and Martha Slattery, "Ryguypt" You will notice they are for everyone having a say in ALL issues. They are NOT running on one issue. That is exactly why I am supporting them. I am pro-information-and have not made up my mind on any issues with out information. This goes for the resort casino as well. A side note to this-My husband has worked for the New England Patriots for 13 years-and we have NEVER voted for the same candidate in the 18 years we have resided in Foxboro. We believe strongly in our democratic process. And welcome to Foxboro-it is truly a wonderful town.

Joanne, they're all running on one issue. How can you say Harrington & Slattery are for "everyone having a say in ALL issues"? Are they in favor of changing the town charter so that every single issue is voted on by the general public?

I don't have an issue with people being for or against a casino or even for those few who genuinely haven't made their minds up yet. What I find disingenuous is people commenting on a casino article saying they're not voting on a single issue. What I find clueless are those who actually believe one set of candidates is in favor of "everyone having a say in ALL issues" or how it's about the right to a vote, constitutional rights being infringed, etc. and the other is not. They do not understand our basic form of government nor what the gambling legislation says and they have bought into the lame Wynn/Harrington that it's all about the right to a vote. Selectmen are elected to represent what they believe to be in the best insterest of their constituents, whether or not it's the majority opinion. The gambling legislation clearly states that the Selectmen have the duty to vote on whether they believe it's in the best interest of the town to enter negotiations... unless of course you're in favor of changing our form of government and the gambling legislation. Everyone's vote WILL be counted, on Monday.

Did Anyone watch the selectmen 'debate' the other day? They spent 90% of the hour or two talking CASINO. This election is about nothing else . This will change the character and makeup of this whole area for 75 YEARS. Give me a break with the 'it's not just the casino' talk..

Dave, maybe if they keep repeating they'll end up believing it but no one else is buying it. I think they're pretty worried that it's going to be Brue & Copolla in a landslide so they're trying to minimize the importance of the election ahead of time.

you make it sound like if Harrington/Slattery get elected a casino will be built and if Brue/Coppola get elected a casino will not be built, this is simply not true. I do beleive if Coppola/Brue get elected it will be more difficult for Wynn but I do not believe that just bu electing H/S a casino will pass. I still think that if it is brought to a vote there is no way the by-law gets changed. The BOS make-up will not change that. I truely will not cast my vote based on this casino issue. I believe there are bigger factor that go into my choices for BOS.

Of course they can change your mind. They have millions of dollars to spend to change your mind. I’m sure Wynn could start selling cigarettes in schools if he spent enough money marketing it.

Ty Warner, the guy who created Beanie Babies, made a fortune convincing people they had to buy the latest stuffed animal. Now people have crates full of Beanie Babies at home while Mr. Ty is a billionaire.

The problem is that a casino is not like a pet rock or a Beanie Baby. If you are convinced to buy into it then change your mind, you are stuck with it. A pet rock you can throw out and not feel too bad about the $2 you might have spent on it; a casino is forever. It’s the mistake that keeps on giving.

So to say you don't want it is disingenuous. Be up front if you want it or aren't sure that's your right. To say you don't want it but want to see a proposal is contradictory.

Larry Harrington will do everything in his power to get a casino in Foxboro. Don't kid yourself. He's been promoting a casino before Kraft/Wynn even has. And if you look in the papers, there are more positive quotes from Harrington about how wonderful a casino would be in Foxboro than Wynn.

Pay no mind to the obnoxious comments like the one above referring to Foxboro residents as "hicks" This is not the first time I hear a jokster refer to Foxboro as a bunch of "hicks" If this poster knew what a "hick" was, that does not define the people in this area, much less this town. We are a middle class town. We are next to many other middle class towns. We do not live in the boonies, we live off a major highway, Route 1. Every town has a few undesireables, namely some of the very outspoken casino advocates that do not represent the majority, but that comes with the issue unfortunately.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh on a dreary morning. Fourteen people have left 30 comments that have nothing to do with whether or not a casino is good or bad for Foxboro. Casinos are coming to MA. Like it or not. Is it better that we host one which as a town we can control, or have one in the next town, which is out of our control? This is an opportunity for Foxboro to to grow in a responsible way. The benefits to the community far out- number the drawbacks. We are not hicks, but we need to stop acting like hicks.

“Allow 11,000 people to vote” is the new calling to get voters to select Mr. Harrington and Ms. Slattery over the two other candidates. The Wynn Casino closes its flyers with “You deserve the right to choose” indicating that the Board of Selectmen is denying us the right to choose.
Reflecting on the past month’s campaign rhetoric, it is clear that the “Freedom to Choose” issue has been exploited to convey the message that the present Board of Selectman are the culprits and that Ms. Brue should not be reelected as one that is not interested in hearing the voice of the majority.
Who is the majority?
The town voted to have a bylaw to protect the town against gambling, which required two thirds majority at Town Meeting. The majority have spoken. Their claim is not correct.
The Democratic system is in place and it works. Provided one is willing to take the steps that are needed to bring about change, there is no possible way that an elected body can impose anything on the people.

As explained by Mr. Paicos in September 2011, the public can present a petition to the Town Officials, with 100 signatures to request that an item be added to the Town Meeting warrant, to cancel or modify the Gambling By Law and/or to request that the BoS enters into a Host Community discussion with the Wynn Casino.

POST 2
Mr. Harrington was made aware of that option but chose not to act on it, nor to pass the information to those who are supporting his re-election. It would be naïve to assume that the Kraft Organization or the Wynn Casino legal teams were not aware that town by laws can be changed or modified and that the people have the power to demand items be added into a warrant for voting.
They simply could have gone this route. Did they feel safe doing so? I doubt it, so their choice was simple- change the dissenting selectman and take over the decision making of the board to represent their interests. This year is Ms. Brue, next year could be Mr. DeVellis.
Wynn Casinos/Kraft are not in a rush, as the legislation is not complete and they have plenty of time to influence town politics and get a friendly Pro Casino board so that they will get a better deal.
So are our rights really being denied? Absolutely not. !
No one denied anyone their rights to get the 100 signatures. People just did not bother to follow procedures that are set up to protect our rights. The 100 signatures can be presented any time the public so desires.

POST 3

The Wynn / Kraft group possibly knew, as a result of all of the polling they have been doing, that they would lose the vote should they have requested to have a referendum on gambling. They changed the strategy to make some people believe that their rights were being denied.
They are hoping we would simply reject the present board to defend our right to be heard, not because we want the casino.
I hope that we all vote to remain strong on our antigambling position until such a time that we can evaluate gambling without Wynn sponsored infomercials, that only show the glamour of the hotels business without the reality of the casino business that might come and change the dynamics of our town as well as our life as we know it .
“DEMOCRACY IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR”

VOTE FOR HARRINGTON/SLATTERY IS TO TELL WYNN/KRAFT THAT THEY CAN BUY INFLUENCE IN OUR TOWN

In reading the comments on Patch it looks to me like you have some candidates with open minds and some that are not. Hopefully the open minded ones will be elected and we can avoid lawsuits that we taxpayers have to fund. As far as a casino goes I very much doubt that Foxboro will ever be approved by the state to get the go ahead. Just get out to VOTE.

Harrington/Slattery want the casino; Brue/Capolla don't. Wanting a casino in Foxboro doesn't make you open minded. In fact, Harrington is so set on getting a casino he is completely closed minded to any problems a casino will bring. He wants to give the casino to Kraft/Wynn no matter what it does to the town. He would negotiate for the best deal for Wynn, not for Foxboro. We need to get him out.

Since you asked, Copolla was a Mass. state Rep. so she has experience dealing with the state. That is huge, considering all the money the state hands out to the towns. Funny thing is, I told the Casino guy, if you can promise Foxboro won't lose power for five days like we did last fall, I'm sure you'd be welcomed with open arms. He knew what i was talking about, and he said that would be discussed at an open meeting. If Kraft can get his electricity from somewhere else, well then maybe Wynn Casinos can help us do that too. Think about what they could do for Foxboro, as opposed to the fictitious "hookers" and "drugs" it'll bring to our town. Open your minds. That's all. Listen. Learn.
